I remember a while ago we talked in this board about the Chernobyl catastrophe. I have little interest in resurrecting the topic, but today I came across this website, Elena Filatova's. She's explored the surroundings of the now abandoned city and compiled her pictures in several articles. Check it out, it's amazing:

I remember when this was first making the rounds of the 'net a couple of years ago. There was a bit of debunking then; the photographer's story of having a special pass via nepotism and riding her motorcycle around alone taking pictures was false; she took a standard tour of the place, and made sure to keep the other tourists out of the pictures.
Not that that lessens the haunting imagery, but it does subtract some of the mystique of the photos' production.

Who knows, really. Somewhere on her site I read there were tours for a while but were abandoned after a while, as the tourist found it too unnerving. But at the same time I wondered why no more people explore the zone, it must be a powerful attraction for historians and tourists alike. Yet she seems to imply sometimes that she may be the only person who has visited certain areas.
Anyway, as you said, this doesn't diminish the impact of the images. There's nothing creepier than ruins, and this being ruins of a modern civilisation makes them even more spookier. |
