I agree with much of what the article said, except the idea that the "amusement park ride" movie was a direct result of the 1988 writers strike. Hollywood was in the business of making dumbed down high concept "tent pole" movies long before the '88 strike. In fact, if anything, the overall quality of movies rose during the 90s.

I'd say the "amusement-ride-movie" was an attempt by most studios to replicate the formula of the Spielberg - Lucas greatest hits. That is, B-movie plot, non-stop action and structure based on set pieces rather than in cohesive plots.
There are still critics around (usually the older guys that were around in the early 80s) that claim Spielberg killed comercial cinema. Which of course it's not true. It was the talentless hacks who tried to replicate the formula who did it, or the studio executives who alienated older audiences by aiming all the movies for 13 year old audiences.
