...And they only could produce X seconds of working footage. Spielberg et al. needed many minutes so they could edit it later as they wished. I read back then that they simulated the whole thing several times, with many cameras walking through the crowds and recording as much as they could.
Don't take me wrong, this shows that if Spielberg had bothered to create a detailed storyboard before filming the Omaha scenes he could have done it with much fewer resources. It's just that from the 90s onwards every "big battle" scene needs to be filmed this way. It was alright at first, but by now I'm tired of all that artificial urgency and confusion.
I saw the restored edition of The big red one a few months ago, it has a key scene set during the Omaha beach landing. It was refreshing to see how Fuller made it work with so little resources.
