Ah, I just felt like shooting fish in a barrel. Today's DigitalDream Door survey list: Top 100 Fantasy Films of All Time.

http://www.digitaldreamdoor.com/pages/movie-pages/movie_fantasy.php

I'll be merciful and list only the top ten, then make passing reference to the rest:

1. The Wizard of Oz
2. Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
3. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
4. Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
5. Beauty and the Beast (1946 version)
6. Time Bandits
7. The Princess Bride
8. Legend
9. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
10. Willow

The top two picks: no argument, very legitimate choices. Sorcerer's Stone at number 3? This belongs on the list somewhere, but not this high, and certainly not above Fellowship of the Ring.

Legend making the top picks is just as ridiculous; I know there are Ridley Scott fanboys who swear by this movie, but come on.

Willow ranking at number 10 pretty much sums up the mentality of this list in general.

Other musings: The Two Towers way down the list at 14 is just insane, especially when you consider the movies chosen above it.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest at Number 20. This movie wouldn't even make my top 100 list. I'd sooner pick Bert I. Gordon's The Magic Sword over Verbinski/Bruckheimer's overblown catastrophe.

Van Helsing at 23? We must be fast approaching one of Dante's inner circles of hell by now. Anyway, isn't that a horror movie? Oh, never mind.

Ladyhawke at 27. Again, whoever made this list must have a fondness for cheese. Or synth.

X-Men: The Last Stand at 29. Note, this is the first X-Men movie to make this list. Anyone else think the third installment was the best of the three?

Hook at 30. I know I've said this before, but this time I really mean it: shoot me now.

Ghostbusters way down the list at 33. Because, y'know, it wasn't as good as Hook or Ladyhawke.

Highlander at 41. This movie shouldn't even be on the list.

Kull: The Conquerer at 66. 666 would be more like it.

The Beastmaster at 84. Krull at 85. Red Sonja at 100. Words fail me. Could it be they just ran out of fantasy movies to list?

Final thoughts: several Ray Harryhausen films made the list, which is nice, but at the risk of speaking heresy, most of his movies don't age well. His FX are fine of course, but the movies themselves are draggily paced and poorly acted. Anyway, my fave R.H. film of the lot, Mysterious Island, wasn't even listed.

My favorite is "Jumanji" (39) beating out "Darkman" (53) - it's time to put the crack pipe down.

I need to ask... did The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958) even made it to the list? I agree Harryhausen stuff hasn't aged well, but this one is a gem.

Dragonslayer over Excalibur??? And who considers Batman and Batman Begins to be a fantasy? And a word to those guys: the fantasy sequences in Bridge to Terabithia are the kids' imaginations at play: the movie is NOT a fantasy!

Finally, what in the blankety-blank is League of Extraordinary Gentlemen doing in here?!

These guys should sue their surgeons. The lobotomies were botched.

These things have always been lame "list stuff you've actually heard of" lists made by tourists. Which does make it a shock that there's a Cocteau film at #5.

7th Voyage of Sinbad made the list... at #93... just behind Conan the Destroyer.

Excalibur is in 19th place; how the hell isn't it a top 10? Also, Eragon is in 76th place and Dungeons and Dragons is in 79th place, but Krull is in 85th? How does Indian in the Cupboard beat out Jason and the Argonauts? How does Night at the Museum beat out Conan the Barbarian? How's Jumanji two places above Clash of the Titans, and Dead Man's Chest one place above The Dark Crystal?

Edit: And how the holy blue hell isn't 300 on the list? Witches of Eastwick makes the cut, but 300 doesn't?

You know Grand Funk, don't you? The wild, shirtless lyrics of Mark Farner? The bong-rattling bass of Mel Schacher? The ... adequate drumwork of Don Brewer?

Behind Conan the Destroyer? I'm done with this world. Tonight I'll put an end to my pitiful existence by inhaling vapors from a can of Steven Seagal's Lightning Bolt (Cherry Experience) and watching reruns of "The simple life".

And if that won't work, there's always the works of Tom clancy.

Well, they can't even keep their own criteria straight ("no SciFi-Fantasy, no Horror-Fantasy"). I think The LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy should just be considered ONE movie (NON of the parts can be considered complete stories by themselves).

I personally would put LEGEND higher up the list as well as the Harryhausen works.

What would be my #1 film isn't even on the list: PORTRAIT OF JENNIE.

Didn't see IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE on list, MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM, nor any version of HAMLET (oh, well the list of what's NOT on this list would be quite long).

Of course MONKEYBONE and FANTASTIC FOUR made it; I'm sure everybody agrees these are classics.

I like Sardu's term "tourist" -- that seems very appropriate.

Not sure how this list was compiled, but I get the impression that a lot of these "top" lists are created by people who have maybe five movies they really, really, really like, and want them to be cosidered THE BEST movies of all time, and then they make a loooong list (with haphazardly designated rankings)to "legitimize" their favorites at the top.

My problem with the lists is that there are people out there who are looking for direction as to what's good and what's not, and to the uninitiated the lists can look like "the real thing", shaping (or warping) the opinions of impressionable minds -- if this happens enough, eventually Garbage becomes the defacto standard for quality (hey, look at the Grammies...), and real quality films are mostly forgotten -- this is why it is necessary to comment on lists like this (even though it does get rather repetitious).

Exactly. Lists like this are useful primarily for suggesting what movies to rent next... when they're done right. This one isn't.

Where's Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory? Where's Miracle on 34th Street? Where's Groundhog Day?

And notice how animated movies were left off the list entirely. But at least they remembered to include Blade. /snark off

The problem with these lists is that they are based on a person(s) perceptions and on how many movies they have actually seen. Also, there are just so many movies out there that some movies are going to be left off.

For instance, check out their Top 100 Horror Movies:

http://www.digitaldreamdoor.com/pages/movie-pages/movie_horror.html

They list "The Exorcist" as No.1 while "Alien" comes in at No. 18. Personally, Alien freaked me out way more then The Exorcist ever did! I was in my early 20's when I saw Alien and for about three nights I never turned off the lights when I went to sleep.

Also, I don't consider "Psycho" (No.2) and "The Silence of the Lambs" (No.4) to be horror movies in the traditional sense. Sure, you can argue that Norman Bates and Hannibal Lecter are monsters, albeit psychopathic criminals, but in my view, a monster should be some alien, mutant, scientific creation gone wild, wild animal, etc, not a human protagonist.

I just happened to take another look at this list and it includes "Cape Fear" (No.40) and "Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer"(No.60). Again, two human villains not some BEM.

I'm sure that you guys, who way more familiar with movies than I am, could find some horror movies that should be on the list.

Anyway just my view.

Their horror list is actually OK for maybe, let's say, for the first 60 entries. After that it appears they're more interested in name-dropping horror films - any horror films - just to fill up the remaining 40 spaces. (The Vampire Lovers?!!!!!)

28 Days Later ranking only 97th on the list is a disgrace. The fact that Needful Things made the list ahead of the aforementioned goes beyond disgrace into outright nuttery.

Well, I've never heard of DigitalDreamDoor, so it's hard to get too worked up about this.
