Just thought I'd start one.
After skipping several year's worth of ceremonies, I'm actually planning to at least watch a bit of this year's, due to an unusually respectable lineup of movies, the chance of a Coen Brothers sweep (ohpleaseohpleaseohplease), Jon Stewart hosting, and the Oscars actually restoring a tiny bit of credibility last year by FINALLY GIVING SCORSESE A FREAKIN' OSCAR.
Seriously, I'll be over the moon if No Country For Old Men takes Best Picture.

I'd say No Country for old men and There will be blood will get most awards, at least the important ones, such as film, director, writing and acting.
It will be an interesting fight for those who like one of them and hate the other one. I liked both a lot, so I'll probably wait until the next day to see which one has prevailed.
BTW, the media here is making a big buzz about the possibility of Javier Bardem getting an Oscar for his role in No Country for old men. What do you think? Does he have any chances? |

I liked Juno, but I really hope not. It's already getting overrated. I'm guessing its big win will be Original Screenplay. And maaaaybe Ellen Page might pull an upset for Best Actress.
I'm usually terrible at predicting the acting categories, whether it be "should win" or "will win". I'm not the greatest judge of acting, period. However, Anton Chigurh is definitely going to go down as one of the all-time great film bad guys, so I'd say Bardem deserves it. I'd also be surprised if Daniel Day-Lewis didn't get Best Actor. He went way, way over the top, yet managed not to annoy me, which is an accomplishment.
I freakin' loved Ratatouille and would love to see it take every category it's nominated in, including screenplay, but I also would be kinda happy to see Persepolis win Best Animated Film. I haven't even seen it (read the comic) but I like any sign that animated movies are starting to move beyond the usual formula.
The only category that really ticks me off this year is Best Song. "Once" was a terrific movie with good songs--it's the one that deserves three slots in this category, not Enchanted. Well, OK, I haven't heard the "Enchanted" songs, but I doubt they're that much better.
Well, OK, "Norbit" getting nominated for anything is also annoying.

Given she's already got an Oscar, practically gets nominated every year, and is guaranteed to win again in the future (probably multiple times in the years to come) I really don't see what she has to be upset about. It'd be like Meryl Streep or Jack Nicholson not winning and asking if it sucks to be them.
I will say this after sitting through that show: what's the point of having acceptance speeches if the Oscars producer is going to cut everyone off so quickly? The whole point of this show is for people to win awards and come up onto the stage to give a little speech yet the moment they get up there to accept their award they're shooed off as quickly as possible. When Gil Cates dies someone needs to show up to his funeral with a full orchestra and whenever someone starts giving a eulogy they get played off after 30 seconds.

| Wow! Just learnt Javier Bardem won the prize for best supporting actor. I'm happy to hear that, he's one of our best actors. Now let's hope he doesn't get typecast in villanous roles. |

Highly doubtful. His next three films are a Woody Allen film, an Italian drama, and a turn as Pablo Escobar. Okay, so one villainous role.

I got to see Scorsese give the Coen brothers an Oscar. I am happy.
Stewart was great. "But before we spend five hours giving each other golden statues, let's take a moment to congratulate ourselves." "Usually when you get a woman or a black man as president, it means an asteroid is about to crash into the statue of Liberty. How will we know it's the future?!?"
In spite of all that and the length, the show somehow still managed to suck hard.

From what I saw of the show, the best joke was one the Best Song winners cracked backstage, and Jon Stewart just repeated it.
Best Song was also the best moment of last night, for me. We actually got to see two ordinary people stumble through their acceptance speeches, which carried a whole lot more weight for me than any written and prepared speech. |

Only problem with that joke is that The Onion already did it months ago.
