A great American. I'm not sure what else I can say, or would need to.
PEGGY: I don't see how having a girl on the team would ruin it. Did a woman judge ruin the Supreme Court? HANK: Yes, and that woman's name was Earl Warren.

I didn't agree with him much but I respected him. The end of an era.

He was the conservative/libertarian voice crying in the wilderness. This is sad news.

| I would say that it was a wilderness before he came along with his scappy National Review. At a time when conservatism was the province of anti-government nutcases, conspiracy theorists, and general John Birch Society wackiness, Buckley came in and bestowed upon it an intellectual legitimacy. With some help of course, from guys like Whittaker Chambers and others... |

| A lot of people may not remember this, but Buckley ran for mayor of New York once as a protest against the liberal Democrat running and the equally liberal Republican. He never even pretended that he had a chance at winning and when the press asked what was the first thing he would do if he won the election, he told them that he'd demand a recount. |

Interesting, he was good friends with Jack Kerouac and Vladimir Nabakov.

I just learned today he was good friends with James Bond himself - or at least Roger Moore.
Kerouac rather famously turned up drunk on "Firing Line". The footage shows up in some biographies of the man. I'm sure a lot of people know more about the man than I, but I got the impression at one point that Kerouac was actually a pretty pro-American guy. I know he's considered to be a grandfather figure to the hippies, but I don't think he ever explicitly postured as a man of the left. |

I believe Buckley also counted John Kenneth Galbraith among his friends as well.
Wouldn't it be great if liberals and conservatives voted and made decisions based upon their beliefs and yet didn't refer to each other as the next coming of fascism? |

Amen. Ah for the days when after a day of legislative struggles Ronald Reagan would play poker with Tip O'Neil.
