THIS JUST IN: Brett Ratner is in talks to direct the INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN remake starring Eddie Murphy. Just to sweeten the pot I'll tell you the script was written by the guys that wrote BALLS OF FURY.

Please please please tell me that was a joke. Please, tell me the the remake will keep the religious and philosophical points that made the original's ending a stunner. Please tell me Christian Bale or Ryan Gosling is starring. Please tell me that Peter Jackson or Ridley Scott is in talks to direct, or maybe Clint Eastwood wants to try something different.
Eddie Murphy and Brett Ratner and Balls of Fury.

BTW, Beacon pictures is reportedly currently at work developing Childhood's End for the big screen. And Lionsgate films is prepping the film version of Atlas Shrugged.
That news might please the AICN reviewer, anyway. |

Well, somebody bet them they could make a worse movie than The Incredible Shrinking Woman with Lily Tomlin.
PEGGY: I don't see how having a girl on the team would ruin it. Did a woman judge ruin the Supreme Court? HANK: Yes, and that woman's name was Earl Warren.

POSSIBLESLIGHTSPOILERPOSSIBLESLIGHTSPOILERPOSSIBLESLIGHTSPOILER WHY remake THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, when any scriptwriter, spending a pleasant afternoon poking in any well-stocked used bookstore could find anthologies of fine fantasy and science fiction stories, some of them going back to the '50s and earlier, stories that are either in the public domain or have very cheap film rights, and which would make fine films? Try something by Mary Elizabeth Counselman or Henry S. Whitehead. In a secondhand anthology of stories from the Saturday Evening Post, of all things, I found a short story by Robert Standish called "Test-Tube Terror." Its about a brother and sister team of Swiss biologists who set out to develop a weed killer. They come up with a product that could defoliate the planet. Want to guess what they do? Hint: it would be a great "get out your hankies" ending. |

Why? The same reason bands remake former hit songs- to ride on the name recognition and the hope that if it was a hit once it could be again.

I think the reason that they do remakes is that (1) the writers are to dumb to actually think up something original and (2) they have never read any Sci-fi/horror/fantasy books in their lives, so they have no idea as to the potential that is out there.
Here's an idea for what I would think would make an excellent movie about UFO's "saving' Earth; W.A. Harbinson's book "Genesis." It has everything that a producer could want: UFO's, horror, conspiracy's, and the ultimate, political correct badguys - Nazi's!

I think some scriptwriters have never read a BOOK in their lives. |

Oddly, although Day the Earth Stood Still is a thoughtful masterpiece of a movie, which has been ripped off repeatedly by much worst films, it actually can be considered a "dumbed-down" version of the original short story, which actually takes the final step and the logical conclusion of Klatu's final speech.

| Well, the trailer is up on Apple's website, and it looks pretty iffy, lots of destruction (and not just of a classic movie). |

| I started to count the cliches in that clip of the day the earth stood still remake and lost track at 30 or so. I agree, the producers seem to have seen every scifi movie ever made but have never read a novel or a short story in their lives. |

Jeez, The Happening tries to do some environmental preachin' and blows it big time. Not it looks like this... this thing is gonna do the same.
My respect for the makers of Wall-E grows the more I think about it. At least they know the rule: make a good movie first, and then worry about gettin' a message in. |

I remember an interview with the creator of WALL-E that basically said that green messages mostly came from the plot. They needed the last robot on Earth, so you had to get rid of everyone else. So you make it a huge dump, and everything follows from there.
The story wasn't build around a message, and no messages was shoved into the story. The fact that there is a message is because it's really just a part of the story. |
