Actually it's interesting if you reduce Battlefield Earth and Dune to equations and then compare them.
One harm BATTLEFIELD EARTH did: Stephen Vincent Benet's short story 'The Place of the Gods," also published as "By the Waters of Babylon" might make a fine film, but it would remind audiences and critics of BATTLEFIELD EARTH and they would laugh. |

I have ones I list as among the worst I've seen, for different reasons...
Some are just really, really boring: The Crawlers, Boys on the Side (shut up, an ex-gf dragged me to it), Blood Tide, some "prehistoric women" movie I can't remember the name of right now.
Some go for intentional humor and fail miserably: Hobgoblins (although this has a LOT of other problems too), Santa Claus Conquers the Martians (ditto).
And some...*shudder*: Funky Forest, Curse of Bigfoot, Zombie '90: Extreme Pestilence.
------------------ Would probably pick Funky Forest as my worst right now... |

I liked Dune, and I didn't like Battlefield Earth. I think there is one simple formula that differentiates the two. BE was BORING. Dune held my attention.
That's my biggest problem with Boll's "House of the Dead". It wasn't just stupid. It was boring. |

Wow- whatever awful traits you can list about HoD I would not number "boring" among them. That's its saving grace IMHO *g*

I know where you're coming from, as my dissections of that retarded story in reader reviews show. But then, that's sort of why we're all here, isn't it? Things that are so bad you can't look away.

Sardu, the first 30 minutes of house of the dead were borderline interesting, but once the "fun" starts, it just seemed to slog on endlessly for me.
I will admit, there was one shot in the film I found hilarious, but I don't think Boll intended it to be. I can't remember the specifics, but they cut to a shot of the bad guy watching our "heroes" from behind a tree or bush. He isn't actually doing anything other than really trying to look evil. It was so incongruous to what was going on, that I couldn't decide what it reminded me of more. An SCTV parody of 50's horror movies, or the reaction shot of the "traitor" in James Brooks movie within a movie in "Modern Romance", that Albert Brooks was desperate to get rid of. I fully expected him to twirl his mustache at that point. |
