I'd say given what passes for "opera" these days it's a perfect fit. The world of commissioned concert hall classical music is an elitist cesspool of Ivory-Tower-Emperor's-New-Clothes hacks, just the types to crap themselves over the idea of setting an Al Gore documentary to music. Mostly, the only decent new orchestral music any more is in film scores and 3/4 of that is crap too.

There's also a stage musical version of THE FLY in the works so this is hardly the craziest idea I've heard for an opera.
