Not that sitting through Apocalypse Now is a very uplifting experience, but I wouldn't call it a marathon of misery. I find Full metal jacket far more depressing.

So, as a sub-genre what would the consensus be on the most depressing war film ever?? At the moment I'd have to stick with Das Boot.

Was it that boring that you were glad to see the credits? I must admit that I don't really like war movies, but I heard that Das Boot was good.

The "good" guys were a German U-Boat crew hunting and sinking Allied ships during World War 2. I'll let you guess what happens in the end.

The most depressing war film I've ever seen was the 1930s version of All quiet on the western front.
And I don't see the problem with the "good guys" in Das Boot being German. Somebody had to try make a war film from their POV, and nobody is telling you to like them or to hail er... uhm... (trying to avoid being Godwined at all costs) their leader.
To be honest, in most of the war films I see I don't like the characters at all, and that doesn't affect me liking the movies. It's not a matter of nationality, it's the callousness and amorality that seems to stick to them as they live through the war. |

The 1984 version of 1984 was bleak as all get-out.

NOLD? Oh, yeah. Full course bummer.
Nev : STALINGRAD is also a film that looks at WW2 from the German perspective. War is an ugly busness, and no less so for the bad guys...but who and what you fight for does matter.

Hated Stalingrad. I said before that I don't mind war movies from the Nazi POV. But this one was damn close to vindicating them. No, thanks.

You know, the irony about NOTLD is that, when I saw it as a little kid, it did freak me out, and it was depressing. But I saw it as a happy ending. Yes, it was sad what happened to all the main characters, but I saw it on larger scale, to wit, it appeared that the situation was under control, order was being restored and the zombie menace was being wiped out. Basically the problems of a few people really doesn’t amount to a hill of beans when a zombie apocalypse hits.
I guess I was a cold blooded, logical sort even as a kid.
