| My local cable network carries CN but doesn't carry Boomerang. Does anyone have Boomerang, and how does it compare? |

My friend gets Boomarang and says it's great. In fact, he said that BEFORE Cartoon Network started showing live-action movies.
Cartoon Network should change it's name; before, they showed movies that were somehow connected to cartoons, but now they aren't even PRETENDING that the movies are even slightly related to cartoons!

If you want classic cartoons, you want Boomerang. CN went off the rails when they decided they could be the hip network with the new cartoons. The problem is that they never had enough content to fill the time slots. That's why you see the live action stuff. Really, they could combine Boomerang and CN and have one good cartoon network.
If anyone has DirectTV, you'll notice that there are something like 4 Nick and 3 Disney kid networks. Really, can there be that much programming for kids and teens?

My gawd, I just checked the Boomerang TV schedule online... this was the Cartoon Network of ten years ago!

The only missing to make it complete would be eps of Samurai Jack. (Wishful thinking department also forwards a request for Tiny Toons and Animaniacs, but hey...)
I'll bet a buncha kids today don't know what they're missing. Do little ones even know who the Flintstones are, aside from the cereal and the vitamins? |

Apparently that IDIOTIC "marketing" ploy they sprung for that Hunger Force movie (where some Jerks put "devices" on bridges around Boston; which then caused a terrorist alert etc) resulted in heavy fines -- this put the kybosh on funding for new cartoon projects, I've heard.

I remember that fiasco, Rob. That was when things started going downhill for the C.N.

It seemed like a couple of things happened. First, they had some original shows that did well. The Power Puff Girls, Johnny Bravo, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Samurai Jack, Dexter's Laboratory, etc. where pretty well received. Then they started Adult Swim which also did well. Although, I admittedly wasn't a fan of much of it and only watched some anime from time to time. From there someone got the brilliant idea that they could take all of the old cartoons and put them on a different network, Boomerang, and then stick original programming on CN. One thing that was obvious though, even in their heyday, they didn't have enough original programming. They would constantly show repeats because a season would consist of maybe 8-14 episodes. It was thin gruel from the start. Building the network around it seemed unlikely. Also, most of their cartoons were pretty sparse in the animation department. It was trendy in the late 90's, but I don't know about today. Finally, Disney and Nick both have animation channels of their own. The competition is a lot fiercer.
It seems to me that they would do better going back to a single channel. Then they could create a limited amount of new material and run blocks of older cartoons in some type of themed format that allowed a rotation to keep the content from getting stale.

| But the problem is they not only ditched the older programming, they also jettisoned their CN-exclusive lineup featuring the very shows you mentioned. I can appreciate, to some extent, the notion of brooming Josie and Pussycats in Outer Space and Top Cat to a second channel devoted to retro-cartoons. But why ditch a cartoon that's only been on TV for a few years? Don't CN execs realize that they have new viewers born (literally) every day, so even though you and I may have seen the same Johnny Bravo cartoon a dozen times, to a youngster watching for the first time they'd seem like brand new? |

I think this shows the (to my mind, regretable) failure of "narrowcasting".
Apparently, these channels start with a bright idea - "Hey, how 'bout a channel that aims directly at fans of sci-fi / cartoons / cooking / origami / llama-keeping? We have a target audience that, once hooked, doesn't have to be repeatedly trolled back from other channels, and most of the content will be relatively cheap. With luck, and a few things that might hit "cult" status, we'll have a money-maker."
And for the first while, it works. But eventually the network runs into the problem that they have attracted all fans of cartoons, or llama-keeping; there's no growth. So, someone says, "You know, home decorating shows are hot right now. How about we grab one? Yeah, it doesn't tie in with the theme, but it'll bring in new blood. Plus, they're pretty cheap to produce."
The problem is that then the regular fans, who are tuning in for their favs, are turned off by hitting "How to Decorate with Alpaca" ten times a week, and viewership actually slumps. The next bright solution is "Well, CBS and NBC are doing well with a few dramas, sitcoms and reality shows. Let's bring THEM in as well!"
And poof! there goes your narrowcasting. Everyone ends up chasing the fickle wide audience, instead of the dedicated but smaller niche audience. |

Amazingly, the couple of cable networks that seem to be doing a decent job are USA and Spike. USA has developed some decent new shows. Spike actually sticks with the guy programming theme. Of course, both have chosen rather broad narrowcasting ideas. Spike is for guys and USA has the quirky characters. SciFi tries to stick with it's idea but the problem with it is that the quality is lacking. (Sorry, BSG is mediocre at best.)
