Sometimes a movie that doesn't seem so hot the first time around can grow on you as time goes on.
In my case, Ronin is a perfect example. Today it's one of my favorite espionage films, but upon the very first viewing I was left disappointed because (TEENY SPOILER ALERT) the McGuffin is never explained and the main villain's comeuppance wasn't, in my estimation, not quite satisfying enough.
Watching it again and again, however, I began to savor the movie's other qualities, which are many. David Mamet's dialogue alone is worth the price of admission. The cast: flawless. Great action sequences. I could go on, but you get the picture. Bottom line, if I'd only seen it that one time, my only reaction to that film would've been "eh!"
Sometimes it pays to give a movie a second chance.
Another flick that comes to mind (and we're getting dangerously close to guilty pleasure territory here) is Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. The first time I saw it, I thought it fell flat. A dreadfully miscast lead, the opening sequence in Jerusalem (!) just didn't work, lousy swordfights, clumsy comedy relief, and what's the deal with that witch? This is Nottingham, not Hogwarts!
And yet... when I saw it again on cable about a year later... maybe it's because my expectations were understandably much lower the second time around, but I began to enjoy it considerably more: the great Michael Kamen score, Alan Rickman as the Sheriff, Mary Mastrantonio as a kick-@ss Marion. By the time I finally decided to buy it on video, I'd become a convert. All the stuff that didn't work before still doesn't work and will never work, but I've developed a lot of affection for the movie anyway. (Again, I'm probably all alone on this, but hey...)
One final example: Code of Silence. I found it completely uninvolving the first time around (and being a Chuck Norris fan at the time I was very disappointed at the scarcity of karate action. Heck, Officer and a Gentleman had more chop-socky action than this movie!) But again, time was kind, and as I watched Code of Silence again over the years, I developed a real appreciation for this movie on several levels, not the least of which was the fine ensemble acting (outside of Chuck, that is). Also the low-key, even naturalistic atmosphere that set the film apart from just about every other cop action movie from the 80s. And last but not least, Frank Tidy's splendid cinematography.
Anyway, those are three of my examples. Any movies you've changed your mind about for the better?

A definite one for me is A.I.. On my initial viewing all I saw was what I perceived as Spielberg's typical tropes ruining Kubrick's concept- an excess of sentimentality, a freaking Robin Williams cameo, capped off with a weak and unnecessary ending. On my second viewing I thought it was genius. Kubrick had always said the Spielberg was the right director for the film anyway and now I get it. Though Robin Williams is still annoying.

Master and Commander is definitely one that grew on me. First time I saw, I actually fell asleep. Second time, I loved it.

BARTON FINK. I couldn't stand it the first time. I watched it again, after reading a few reviews, and it became one of my favorite movies.

Didn't like Blade Runner at all the firs times I watched it. Simply, I was too young to appreciate it and I found it incredibly dull. I enjoyed it the first time on my late teens, on the 4th viewing or so. It just blow me away.

I didn't care for Star Trek II the first time I saw it. Now I consider it the best of the bunch, by far.

I thought Grizzly Man was stupid the first time i saw it. Just saw parts of it on cable and figured it was glorifying the person. But after seeing the whole thing I realized that while the director may have some admiration for him, he also thought he was a bit of an idiot.

For me, "Miller's Crossing". The first time I saw it, I enjoyed it, but that was about it. However, the more I started watching it, the more I started liking it. Now, I think it's one of my top 10 films of all time. I think for me, it was getting a feel for the dialog that changed it from a nice move to one I can't stop watching when it comes on.
I also was mildly disappointed in "The Departed" upon my first viewing. Howeever, other than the romantic subplot, the movie has really grown on me. |

Funny, that was my reaction as well. Maybe because I saw it cut up and interrupted by commercials on TV or something, but when I finally saw it again on video, man, what a difference.
Okay, now say it with me everybody, 1...2...3...
