At last, a DigitalDreamDoor list I actually enjoyed: Top 10 worst song remakes of all time.
http://digitaldreamdoor.nutsie.com/pages/best_coversongs.html
Since only ten are listed, no doubt they missed a few. But still it's a good place as any to start. 1. Behind Blue Eyes - Limp Bizkit 2. Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds - William Shatner 3. Feel Like Making Love - Kid Rock 4. American Pie - Madonna 5. Stairway To Heaven - Dolly Parton 6. September Gurls - Bangles 7. Dock Of The Bay - Michael Bolton 8. Sweet Child O' Mine - Sheryl Crow 9. My Generation - Hillary Duff 10. I Love Rock 'N' Roll - Britney Spears
Has anybody heard these recordings? William Shatner singing "Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds"?! No doubt the breatlessly anticipated follow-up to his rollicking best selling cover of Elton John's "Rocket Man".
(An aside: that Family Guy parody with Stewie always slays me.)
Dolly Parton singing "Stairway to Heaven"? Good grief! Can't imagine Sheryl Crow singing "Sweet Child of Mine" could've been that bad (but then again, I've never heard it). And even though I'm the leastest fan of Britney Spears on this green earth, I heard bits and pieces of her "I Love Rock N Roll" over the years and, no, she's no Joan Jett or anywhere close, but I've heard covers far worse.
For example, my first pick: Aretha Franklin's cover of the Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby". Heresy, you say, dissing Aretha? Try listening to it sometime.
Any favorites picks out there in the Peanut Gallery?

| Just heard a truly cringe inducing cover of Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game" by REM. As much as I like REM, they should have buried this one somewhere. |

Mariah Carey et al singing CCR's Proud Mary. This song is about a lifestyle that none of them have ever come anywhere close to experiencing.
Maybe I'm biased, though. For all of CCRs great songs that I wouldn't mind hearing more often, this one was already overplayed. |

That techno cover of Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb" had my ears bleeding.
I wouldn't call it WORST, but one very misguided cover was Shawn Colvin's take on "Pride (In the Name of Love)". Shawn, that song needs to be raucous and fiery to work; pensive doesn't cut it. And what happened to the Oh, O-oh oh, oh o-oh oh ending?!
Sheryl Crow's cover of "Sweet Child of Mine" was okay, in my opinion. But her cover of Led Zeppelin's "D'yer Mak'er"..... UGH!
Wasn't it Ugly Kid Joe that murdered "Cat's in the Cradle"? |

A Perfect Circle covering Imagine. Wow. First I thought there was something wrong with my VW's stereo. Then, I thought I had found the Horrible Crap Channel. And is there any version of Knocking on Heaven's Door that sounds good? Even the original?
It's just not a good song.
Stop covering it.
Now.

Someone did a horrid ravaging of my personal favorite, Don Henley's "The Boys of Summer."
It was then that I lost all faith in humanity & moved to a cave in Tibet.
One with internet access, obviously.

Not sure if it's exactly a "cover" but Sergio Mendes did a remake of MAS QUE NADA with the Black Eyed Peas that was just All Wrong.
Shatner's LUCY IN THE SKY is from his THE TRANSFORMED MAN album, where he also covered IT WAS A VERY GOOD YEAR, HOW INSENSITIVE and MR. TAMBOURINE MAN (which is at least equal to LUCY in it's jaw dropping, yet highly entertaining, insanity).

On the subject of covers, there's a terrific podcast called Coverville on which the podcasters assembles a dazzling array of covers. Of course, one man's meat, etc., which means that sometimes you hear something that makes to want to get revenge on that damned black monolith that dragged out species out of apehood.

| I assume you mean covers that were hits because you have never heard me attempting, while in the shower, a Towns Van Zandt song. A few years back I think that it was Tiffany or Debby Gibson or some other favorite of the 12 year old set who did I Think We're Alone Now, the old hit by Tommy James and the Shondells. That was one of the worst I have ever heard. |

I can't resist naming what I think is one of the very best and most unusual covers of a great song. Great songs take on a life of their own and become standard parts of many people's repertory. Here is Gene Clark, the great song writer from the Byrds and Carla Olson of the Textones doing a transformed rendition of John Fogarty's fine song "Its Almost Saturday Night". I like it even better than the original.

Hummm...did Nemoy ever do covers? I know anout the original mutants, I mean songs...
Is it okey to prefer a parody to the original? I like Weird Al's "The Sage Begins" to "American Pie." What?
Marvin the Paranoid Android to Buzz Lightyear "Too infinity and beyond-i've been there, its rubbish!" "Hoody Hoo, i waste 'em with my cross bow!" Bob Herzog- KODT

That reminds me...Mariah's covers of classic rock warhorse Bringing on the Heartbreak and her electronica attempt at covering Townes Van Zandt's High, Low and In-Between are bad. Even Tori Amos, who I like a bit, tried some awful Slayer song. Bad cover of noise.

Well, if you're going there...

Always remember what Nic Cage said (in a grammatically awkward way) in 8mm though: there are things that, once you see them, you can never unsee them... or unhear them...
BTW we do seem to be picking on the ladies here in this thread. Shame on us.
And for balance, here's my pick for one of the BEST covers ever. Many might think it's on the wrong list but Kurt Frickin' Cobain agrees with me so :-P lol This version blows compared to the live version but it's all I could find:
