Well, I finally saw an infamous bad movie for the first time: Hudson Hawk. And the experience prompted the question in the thread's title. Now don't get me wrong, it's pretty bad. And it gets worse as it goes. Bits of it are dismally painful. But, on the whole, I didn't think it lived down to its reputation. This is one of those movies that has entered the public consciousness as the epitome of a turkey but I found it at least watchable. I'd take it any day over, say, a League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen or a Van Helsing any day, let alone a Last Action Hero. And in the comedy world it's not even a Police Academy 2, let alone a Porky's 2. What other films would you nominate as being, if mediocre, still not deserving of the awful reputation they carry?

Well, I thought League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was a good movie and totally undeserving of its bad rap. Maybe fans of the graphic novel took offense to changes made in the screen adaptation, but aside from one or two moments of confusion and a disappointing ending I never understood what all the whining was about.

I didn't read the comic League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, but even I could tell that the movie was a bad adaptation! An entire review could be written just about the tech errors!
For your question Sardu, I would say 1941.

True, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen felt very dumbed down, and I haven't read the comicbook either. Still somehow enjoyable.
Hudson Hawk is one of my guilty pleasures. I don't know if it's any good, honest, but it always makes me laugh. |

I enjoy Hudson Hawk also. It's almost certainly not deserving of mention in an all-time worst-ever list, but it's pretty bad for a big-studio picture. The reputation comes from this being such a poor effort from people who should honestly know better, and from it being a vanity project for Bruce Willis, and therefore not trying to entertain anyone but Willis. Seriously, what's the audience for this picture?
You know Grand Funk, don't you? The wild, shirtless lyrics of Mark Farner? The bong-rattling bass of Mel Schacher? The ... adequate drumwork of Don Brewer? |

One movie that seemed to have gotten super-slamed by everybody is CATWOMAN -- I thought the early scenes were quite painful to watch (literally -- I was getting a headache from the unnecessary camera movement), but once "catwoman" finally appears, it did get to be entertaining (Halle Barry in that costume sure didn't hurt) -- yes, all around it's not a good movie, but it's not something that should be considered "worst".
First time I saw LAST ACTION HERO, I was disappointed, but years later, I watched it again and actually found it to be decent entertainment, with some actual laugh-out-loud moments (Arnold as HAMLET).

Last action hero has its share of problems towards the end, but it's an excellent parody of the Chuarcheneger - Joel Silver films of the era. It deserved to do much better than it did at the box office. Whoever thought of pitting it against the first Jurassic Park deserves to be tar and feathered, and then sent back to marketing school.
European critics seem to love it. I did for the most part, until the whole thing started trying too hard to be sentimental. |

Maybe I need to give Last Action Hero another try. I mainly remember hating the kid and thinking it just wasn't being true to its own internal logic, but it's been many years since I've seen it. I also agree that Catwoman, while no masterpiece, isn't the worst of the recent spate of comic book movies to come out by a long shot. I took it as being intentionally tongue-in-cheek, at least to some degree.

Which was the ONLY reason the movie got made. Actually, I thought the costume looked stupid. Obviously they were told to for an adult look to take it away from the "comicbook" albatross that movie-makers insist on saddling these screen adaptations with, but thought that "adult" ment "B+D fetish".
