Best: Women's Beach volleyball. Great uniforms. AHHH life just doesn't get any better.

Dumbest: Womens gymnastics. The American girls were complaining they they got defeated by Chinese girls who were too young. To paraphrase Greg Ferguson, Imagine the New York Giants complaining that they lost the superbowl because their oppenents were acting like 10 year old girls. What kind of sport is it that 10 year old girls are winning? How can anyone watch this?

I watched the USA-China women's water bolo match (USA won 12-11). What's the polo equivalent of "diving," the term for faking a penalty? Cuz a Chinese defensewoman was embellishing so much that the only thing she didn't do was scream "Shark, shark!"

I just can't get into any sport where the winner is determined by judges. You do the event, and then you have to wait for someone else to render an opinion to find out how you did? I just can't get into it.

The sports added to the Olympics just get dumber and dumber. A recent addition is something called rhythmic gymnastics where very young girls twirl ribbons and toss balls and bowling pins into the air and catch them. Excitement reigns!

synchronized diving is also pretty stupid. synchronized swimming dumber still.

You still can't beat curling in the winter Olympics for heart pounding action!

The dumbest I ever saw was an exhibition sport at the '84 or '88 Olympics called Motoball. Think soccer played with a soccer ball twice in size being knocked around by guys on dirtbikes. One of the stupidest things I've ever seen. Motoball is a real sport played in Europe, particularly Germany. I question how popular it really is. You can find clips of it on YouTube. You'd think the motorcycle aspect would make things more exciting. You would be wrong.

Don't criticise Motoball, Foywonder. In a few more years, once the TV channels really start to hit the bottom of the barrel, that could give us Rollerball. From your description, all it needs adding is a metall ball and cheerleaders.

As for me, I hate all kinds of televised sports, so I'm avoiding TV these days more than ever. Except for Female Beach Volleyball, that is.

Edit: For a funny comment on the Chinese gimnast team and other related, watch this video from "The Daily Show".

And no, I'm not posting it because it makes us Spaniards look good for once.

I just can't get any amount of interest up for the summer olympics. I find myself looking at some of these athletes and, instead of marvelling at their life-long quest which brought them to this moment, I find myself wondering whose pee they used to pass the doping test.

Same for the winter olympics, except for hockey, which I'm a fanatic about, and curling, which I just find mesmerizing for some strange reason. Sliding down the ice, tossing a tea kettle, teammates sweeping furiously...I can't change the channel, and I don't know why.

I love curling! You're right, it's just so surreal you can't not watch once you start. And there's subtlety to it as well. In Summer I like the Triathlon and Pentathlon type stuff. It's just cool to watch someone ride a bike for a few miles, jump off and shoot a rifle, then jump in the lake, etc. *lol* And I like the Equestrian girls in their little spiffy outfits holding their butts up in the air.

As much as I like to watch women in tight and revealing outfits running around, I have to say that a great deal of my interest in the Olympics has faded since the Americans pretty much wiped the floor with our basketball team. The fact that I'm completely unaware of any of the rules of basketball despite playing the sport for three years in high school doesn't help matters.

I shall dedicate the rest of the summer to recreate, with the help of recreational drugs, any possible scenario in which we could have won. So far the only valid one involves a team of Pau Gassol clones and the revocation of the laws of gravity, but I'm still working on the subject.

Are you trying to start an argument with the Argument Machine? Gymnastics is one of the most demanding, challenging sports around. It is perhaps the only thing I watch in the summer olympics outside of the obvious Olympic centerpiece, the equestrian triad, which we'd see more of if they weren't being held in Hong Kong. Phooey to you.

And should they not be glad WE arn't picking the events...
Ya know, B-movie sports. Rollerball, mud wresteling, death race 2008, that kinda thing.

I think Olympic Battleship would be fun!
Involves handgrenades, large scale model ships, and a swatting big pool.

Biathlon, cross county skiing and ... shooting? I know it has its roots in real life hunting but as a sport it seems a pretty weird combination and one that is a snore to watch as well.

and they could have a summer equavalent as well, say, rollerblading and darts.

They just decided to kill softball. I hate any Olympic sport that has a serious professional equivalent. Plus, I agree that any sport that involves "judging" is not a sport. That doesn't mean there isn't a lot of physical ability involved. It does mean that it really is subjective. And when you add in the speeds at which some of the events are performed, it really looks like guess work.
