There must some true on BT's words, otherwise I can't explain why I like Chuck Norris 80s movies.

I've said it before, but it bears repeatin': if you want to have a message, fine, go ahead and put it in your movie. But your first priority is to make a good movie! If the message doesn't come through (or if the viewer doesn't agree with it), it's still worthwhile! If you preach without trying to, you know, give people a good reason to plunk their butts down (after spending at least eight bucks) and watch the movie, it doesn't matter if people agree with you or not. Your movie failed. Period. End of story!

I've seen several movies whose viewpoints I didn't share. I liked a lot of them and have a few in my DVD collection. They were movies first. The ones which tried to ram a view down people's throats...

Ahem. Lions For Lambs.

So has anyone seen this? Reading online reviews is pointless (It shows how much liberals suck, FIVE STARS!, or conservatives aren't funny, ZERO stars!). It sounds and looks bad to me (the ground zero stuff sounds appalling), but I'm wondering if anyone saw it and liked it.

I saw it over the weekend, and while I'm fairly sympathetic to the film's viewpoint, it was unfortunately pretty clunky. It did have its high points & there were some good gags, but overall it could have been a much better movie. It's nice to see someone at least trying to do satirical comedy from this angle, but it'd certainly be preferable for them to do it really well. I can laugh at *good* political comedy whether it mocks my own philosophy or another, but it takes a lot of finesse to pull off the "Message Comedy" genre.

I guess I hope they keep trying these things, so long as they improve the quality in the process. If they can't do that, I'd just as soon they not make `em.

If you agree with the film's point of view, don't expect too much, but I suppose American Carol is worth seeing for its novelty value & the couple of guffaws it provides.

I saw the tv commercial. It looks painful, along the lines of one of those Scary Movie knockoffs. I rarely rent comedies and this one doesn't look it will break that trend.

And, frankly, Michael Moore is so painful to contemplate (and I'm what most conservatives would consider a "liberal") that even a movie mocking him makes me want to avoid it.

AN AMERICAN CAROL flopped at the box office this past weekend, barely out-grossing Bill Maher's RELIGULOUS which opened on a thousand less screens. This can only be one possible explanation for the film's poor box office showing: LIBERAL CONSPIRACY~!
quote:
When the conservative satire An American Carol failed to catch huge numbers at this weekend's box office (it did make the top 10 though), the team behind the David Zucker-helmed parody says that that there has been a vast, ticket-switching conspiracy designed to deflate "An American Carol" B.O. grosses (and boost, perhaps, the thinly-veiled pro-immigration dogma of "Beverly Hills Chihuahua")

FROM DAVID ZUCKER: "We have had heard from numerous people across the country that there has been some ticket fraud when buying a ticket for An American Carol this past weekend.

Please check your ticket. If you were in fact one of those people that were "mistakenly" sold a ticket for another movie please fill out the form below. Hold on to your ticket so we can have proof.

If you have noticed other irregularities with the theatres in your area please let us know in the comment section below. For instance, Rated R film rating (when in fact we are rated PG-13), posters not being up, not being listed on the marquee, incorrect showing times listed, image or focus problems, sound issues, or theaters not showing the film at all (when they in fact have the film), etc.

Please email us a picture of your ticket stub to: "fraud@americancarol.com We are still investigating all claims".

"image or focus problems, sound issues" - Hmmm... So those showings of HANCOCK, RAMBO, THE MIST, and THE KINGDOM I attended in the past year were also victims of lefist sabotage?

"theaters not showing the film at all (when they in fact have the film)" - Didn't Uwe Boll use the same excuse when BLOODRAYNE bombed?

David Zucker needs to get together with Spike Lee and form a support group for filmmakers who blame poor box office on political conspiracies.

That reminds me of when Mario Van Peebles' Panther was in theaters some years ago, and I heard a DJ on this R&B radio station repeating a rumor about how people were supposedly buying tickets to Panther only to receive tickets for other movies. Same idiocy, different ideology, I supppose.

Is it possible that this is a joke on the part of Zucker, playing on the (liberal)claims about electoral fraud from the 2000 US elections? Or am I giving him too much credit?

This is a case of the Easier Explanation is Usually Right theory.

Movie bombs. The cause could be one of two things:

(1) Vast secret conspiracy among theatres which could leave them exposed to legal action and bad press with no real upside...

*or*

(2) ...the movie sucked.

Hmmm.
