And, unlike vinyl records (these days a lot of indie rock labels release their current product on vinyl as well as CD and download), I doubt there is enough sentimentality about VHS tapes to sustain any kind of subculture.

I don't feel remotely nostalgic of VHS tapes. I mean, the colors were washed up and I lost countless of them when my VHS felt temperamental and chewed them up.

I for one welcome our new DVD overlords. And DivX too, I don't mind losing some quality in exchange of portability and being able to squeeze between three and six movies per DVD.

I'm only nostalgic for VHS because I grew up with the format. And most of my videos have held up pretty well. Amazing considering some of them are over twenty years old.

Oddly enough, I had this dream last night where I was at someone's house, and a small fire broke out, and the smoke somehow rendered their old VHS tapes unwatchable.

You know, now that scene in Tropic Thunder where Ben Stiller is surprised to find they still use VHS in Vietnam now almost feels like an homage.

To be fair HiFi VHS does/did make a VERY high quality analog music recording medium. Well apart from the inevitable mechanical problems. Actually, I'm glad the whole format has died a hot flaming death. It doesn't even have the kitsch value of 8-track.

Unlike vinyl albums, which can produce a beautiful warm sound the likes of which are impossible in digital, VHS tape produces washed out video and lousy sound, except when the entire band is used for audio, then the sound is quite good indeed. The advantage is that VHS is cheap and recording tv shows over blank tapes is even cheaper. I, for one will keep my recorder for movies not available on dvd and to record tv shows but i will not miss the format.

I need to go ahead and get a DVD recorder. After that, the only reason I'd want to keep my VCR would be because I have a couple of movies that aren't available on DVD. Actually, if I found they were available on the old laserdisc (bulky and awkward, but better than VHS), I'd throw away my VCR altogether.

(Aw, dang. That VCR has done me well for the last nine years; Sony makes good stuff. I think I hear it crying in the living room.)

For certain movies, or certain *kinds* of movies, anyway, pristine DVD transfers somehow seem "wrong". IMO, movies like The Warriors, Commando, or the oeuvre of Michael Paré almost demand to be viewed on a VHS tape that's been rented 482 times.

Other than that, I certainly won't miss the format. I really should figure out a way to transfer the last remnants of my once-huge VHS stash to disk, but it's such a pain in the ass that I haven't gotten around to it.

I remember watching the HBO show Oz for the first time on really crappy VHS tapes. For some reason I preferred watching the tapes over the series DVD's i eventually bought. I guess a show about a violent prison looks better when it looks bad.

I mourned the loss of the superior sound quality Betamax more so than VHS. Good riddance.
