This thing looks cheesier by the minute. The whole prequel concept was limited from the start. Now it looks like J.J. has decided to take it down the same path as the B&B boys did. Basically the thought is that we need more sex, explosions, and cool effects. Yep, that's going to work and bring back ST. Jabootu is heading into space again.

Who are the B & B boys?

Berman and Braga who pretty much ran Star Trek after Rodenberry passed away. While they did a pretty good job with TNG, they had no idea of what to do with DS9. Voyager and Enterprise went from mediocre to pretty much a failure. With regards to the movies, they had one success and the rest were again mediocre to failures. If they are going to bring ST back, it needs to move forward to something new which means fresh blood and fresh ideas.

I actually prefered DS9 to TNG. It seemed more of a Ron Moore project than a Brannon and Braga one, more war and quirky characters, less Diana Troi. It's funny watching new Battlestar Galatica and seeing Moore reuse many of the tropes he employed in DS9.

Someone else pointed that out about Moore. He was baffled as to why Moore did BSG just to redo a lot of what he did with DS9. But you are correct that DS9 was more of a Moore project. I've never been able to really get into DS9. I tried watching it again on Spike when they were showing it and I just never really connected. That probably explains why BSG is pretty blah in my book. Although, I think BSG shows that Moore really needs someone over him to keep him in check and to force him into a coherent narrative. He has talent, but it's a talent that gets away from him without limits.

Well, I did finally watch that trailer and while I will try and remain open minded about the whole thing I'm now fairly sure that not only is Trek still dead to me but I will find the flailing about of its lifeless corpse neither fascinating or entertaining merely because they've dressed it up in shiny hip clothes and taken it to the most expensive place in town.

I once put a posting on the scifi channel BBS that adding the characters from FarScape to Stargate in order to breath some life into Stargate was like transplanting the head of one dead horse onto the body of another dead horse and then flogging it. (I received a scolding message from the scifi channel telling me that with any more such postings I would be banned.) This new Star trek movie seems to fall in the same pattern of moving dead horses around expecting them to come to life.

I'm betting that this rebooted Star Trek will be as sucessful as Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes remake. No sequel for you!

If does look awful. Prequils are very tough, especially when dealing with characters we have seen over and over for 45 years. Are there any movie prequils that are not Jabootu worthy?

Parts of The Godfather Part 2 could be considered a prequel.

None I can name...
I'm sorry, But for me, Bill, Leonard and De are Kirk, Spock and Bones...and these new kids on the deck have to pull off impersonations of those actors...the reason the preview is cut up so fast, is to keep us from seeing how badly they do the gig.
Also, the USS Kelwin that gets it int the trailer? Single warp pod, by the look of it. That should have been at the end of the dorsal fin, but nooo...can't fit the original series background...
I'm sorry, but as a original series kid, i'm not rational right at the moment...
I think I'll got set my MK II Phaser on overload now...don't mind the high pitch occilating sound...it won't last long...

Physics was a long time ago but based on the trailer, let me see if I can guess what would really happen. Young Kirk skids his car just before the cliff and let's say decrease vehicle speed to 65 MPH. Kirk jumps out which results in Kirk moving away from the vehicle but still moving at 65 MPH. Young Kirk dies from impact if he miraculously holds with his dead hands to stop going over the cliff. Correct?

Flange, I like "New Kids on the Deck."
