If nothing else, his fingers should have been sanded off! The kids attitude matches a novel that showed kirk and his dad on an early mission together. the book...was better.

Actually, a germ of an idea for this sort of movie would have been from the book adaption of ST:The Motion Picture. The story talks of how the first exploration missions into space were composed of the best and brightest Earth could muster. The results were disastrous. Too many of the brightest were either seduced by the exotic nature of the alien cultures, driven to depression by feeling outclassed, or hopelessly unable to believe the dangers they faced (because they were the brightest). Kirk and his crew represented new thinking for what made good exploration crews. They weren't stupid, but they weren't college professor types either. They could recognize danger and being inferior but weren't the type to admit defeat. It was an interesting intro that has stuck with me for almost 30 years.
If I were writing the story, I might put the situation in the context of Earth and Vulcan being the only two members of the Federation (with maybe 3 or 4 small races included). They have managed to get an armistice with the Romulans and have a cold war with the Klingons. To date, attempts to expand the Federation have failed. Yet the Vulcans determine that unless the Federation expands, the Romulans and Klingons will eventually overwhelm the Federation. Cue Kirk and company starting out. Yes it messes with continuity but it seems to be true to the Star Trek mythos. Spock could even be a concession by the Federation to the Vulcans because the Vulcans are concerned about this new methodology for coming up with exploration crews.

Man, tough crowd. I guess I'm the dork at the party, because I thought the preview looked good. Then again, I was always more interested in the episodes with combat than the others.
Look, it's a reboot. It's no different than Daniel Craig's Bond in Casino Royale. Everyone bitched and moaned about how he couldn't possibly be Bond because he looked all wrong, and when it was all said and done, because the movie was well made, his looks didn't matter.
This movie could suck big time, no doubt. I'm not a big fan of putting a pretty boy at the helm. But watching 70 year olds with massive guts (at least those that are still alive) would be out of the question as well. Plus, I think guys like Simon Pegg and Karl Urban could be great. If the movie sucks, the market will speak, and it will fade into the ether, just as Planet of the Apes did (I can't speak for you, but the remake has had ZERO impact on my ability to enjoy the earlier films). If it's good, then what's the harm?
In fact, I will go a bit further and say I would much prefer a reboot, than some sort of sequel, in that a reboot exists in it's own time frame, and doesn't do anything to spoil the original. For instance, the fact that Alien 3 (spoiler to follow) kills off Hicks and Newt AND Ripley, making the last half of Aliens completely pointless, is far more damaging than if someone remade Aliens. At least in my opinion.

Flange, that wouldn't be Final Frontier, would it? The one where George Kirk and Captain Robert April encounter the Romulans? |

I don't remember Roms, but spacepirate types were involved. One female shuttle crewgirl gets a leg frozen of by a supercoolant leak. And Jim sees a fater/son relationship a lot worse then his own. Its been a while. Story starts with Jim and some friends trying to run away from home, and getting busted.

I'm a little disappointed that for movie buffs, so few around here seem to have actually been following the new film.
Kirk is indeed fresh out of the academy. He's not in command until situations towards the end of the film place him there. The captain throughout most of the film is Captain Pike, now played by Bruce Greenwood. The film's set prior to TOS, so having a younger crew makes perfect sense.
I'm an old Trek fan who lost interest towards the end of TNG and especially as B&B drove the franchise into the ground with Voyager, Enterprise, and the last couple of films, and I'm really looking forward to the new movie. The full trailer looked great.

Okay...
If I detect a HINT of the theme from Dark Knight in the latest trailer, should I be scared?

I think it's the music that does it.
I still think it looks pretty good. I'm pretty psyched by the casting of pretty much everyone except for Kirk. |
