Apparently, Roger Ebert got in trouble recently because he reviewed a film that he only watched 8 minutes of.
I'm inclined to say the film was Jabootu worthy. But the more I read about it, it sounds like something where people just got together and made a film just to see if they could do it.
Ebert took a few notes and then submitted a one star review.

It caused such a outrage that Ebert apologized and wrote this.

That was completely unprofessionial. And I could sight one movie where he hated it at the beginning and then changed his mind toward the end.
As someone wrote about a totally dissimilar movie, Paul Morrissey's TRASH, it's the kind of film you want to walk out of, and then when it's over you want to see it again

Ebert deserves the backlash. No matter how crappy the movie was, his attitude was snobish and unprofessional.
Looks like it's a thing every major film critic tries to do at least once in their careers, because I'm pretty sure of having read about similar incidents before. |

When you're going to see a movie, if you pay to see it, you owe it to the movie to give it at least fifteen minutes or so before you decide whether or not you want to walk out.
When you're paid to watch the damn thing and make your recommendation to others, you don't get to leave, unless it gets to be so sickening that you can't take anymore. But you do everything you can to watch the first half, at least.
And when you're one of the highest-paid critics in the country and you walk out after eight minutes (no matter how crappy the movie may be), then fail to inform the reader of this until the end of your review....
Is Ebert still working? Most critics would be fired for pulling a stunt like this. I lost most of my respect for the man some time ago. The last bits of it are burning away. |

Maybe decades of having to watch dreck to collect a paycheck has taken it's toll -- I'm sure for every good movie he's seen, there must have been quite a few worthless ones (ones that weren't even entertainingly bad).

Bobby-G has a point. I think we do similar things. too. Experiance tells us 'this is gonna hurt', so we listen and like King Arther, run away. Its not often a film starts off 'bad' and gets better. Sheer mathamatics goes aginst the odds. I think he took a chance no one would know about his quick exit, and got caught. He should have stayed, I agree. He's payed to. But I think we cajn all understand the forces that tempted him to run away.

I don't think he thought he wouldn't be caught. He used that fact as a punchline in his review.
His crime is that he thought people wouldn't care. He didn't realize how blatantly unfair he was.
As much as a lark this film seems to be, they did get it to a point were it would be reviewed by a respected critic. That's impressive in and of itself. Not too many people get a shot at the brass ring. For Ebert to blow them off and then sully their reputations(even if it was deserved) without giving them their full day in court is just plain wrong.
For Ebert's part, if he thinks a film is a waste of time, he should have just written a small blurb on his thoughts and not given any stars. Or he should have dumped the review all together.

I agree with Capt. Nemo. If Ebert had been honest and had just given his thoughts on why he walked out without enough material to fully review the movie he would have saved himself a lot of trouble. He also would've accomplished more in condemning the movie.
