I found it a massive disapointment after the glories of Casino Royale. Anyone else?

Uh, Oh! - A friend of mine was in London to see the premier, and he too was disappointed (I'm not sure if "massively" so, but...).
Maybe the first was just so good, that the follow-up couldn't be anything but a let down -- maybe I'll enjoy it more, now that my expectations aren't as high. |

| It opens here in Canada on Friday I believe. We have to make an effort to check it out. |

In what way was it a disappointment?
Did they abandon the new tone of Casino Royale? Or was it just a snooze-fest? |

I thought it fell uneasily between the two stools of the new gritty Casino Royale style Bond and the old style 'fun and campy' Bond which led to it being confused and unsure of itself. For example, it tried to incorporate the CR style character development but all it really amounted to was 'Bond is a bit miffed his girlfriend betrayed him and then committed suicide'. The action scenes tried to imitate the Bourne series, all shaky camera work and quick editing, but this just led me to being confused as to what was actually supposed to be happening. And the plot jumped about too much as well.

I agree that they tried to imitate the Bourne Identity action scenes with shaky camera. The problem is Bond doesn't have a establishing shots to give you an idea of what exactly is going on.
In my opinion, they kept the seriousness of Casino Royale. Which I think is a good move on their part.
The part that I felt lacking was the plot. I've seen a similar plot better handled in the movie Chinatown. The bad guy this time around was a bit of a pip squeak. Not a Le Chiff by any stretch. And every Bond film lives or dies based on its bad guy.

Personally, I'd like to see a James Bond depicted (just once) as Ian Fleming portrayed him in his novels. In those, he was mostly a hardened cold-blooded killer with a scar on his face, a large "you know what" and lacking most of the "social refinements" of the movie Bonds.

| The Bond of the novels is also a very real person. He makes mistakes, has money troubles, is always fighting with his insurance company, and is sometimes afraid. I don't think that I would like him if I met him but he does make for engaging stories, especially with Fleming's fanciful plots and humorous political side comments. I don't know whether this James Bond would make for a successful movie character however. Timothy Dalton, a superb actor, tried to make his Bond very real and the movies were not all that successful. |

| While I haven't seen this new film, what seems to be missing is the humor, the old panache that Sean Connery gave to the character. |

I understand Fleming added some traits (bon mots, for example) from inspiration of Connery's version.

Just seen it, I think it's a bigger piece of crap than Die another day. I really can't imagine why the producers took the pains and the risk to reboot the franchise with Casino Royale just to throw everything out of the window by the next year.
Apart from the fact that the action sequences are more Bournish than ever, there's nothing in this film we didn't get before during the Pierce Brosnan period. I can't say if it was better then, but I'm pretty sure that at least it didn't look like a f--- in' car commercial. |
