Actually, there is a new WWI movie out called Passchendaele starring Paul Gross who also directed and financed the movie. The movie deals with the title battle from a Canadian standpoint. Interesting like Gallipoli it also portrays the British officer corps as a bunch of idiots. Haven't seen the movie yet, because they stuck a love story right in the middle. However, apparently, the beginning and ending are supposed to be pretty good. The movie got mixed reviews up here in Canada. Don't know if its been released stateside or in Europe yet.

I guess I disagree with this. If the right project comes along, Hollywood will absolutely make a "positive" Iraq war movie. In fact, there is a film in pre-production concerning the Battle of Fallujah, possibly starring Harrison Ford. If the movie is good, people will go. If it's bad, they won't.

Two fine works of young adult fiction, both based on the author's family records and the memories of parents or grandparents, both dealing with the American Civil War, would make fine family films, not multi-million dollar blockbusters, but fine family films. Irene Hunt's Across Five Aprils, 1964, is based on the boyhood of the author's grandfather. It shows the Civil War through the eyes of a boy who is nine years old when the war breaks out and who has brothers fighting on both sides. James D. Forman's Becca's Story, 1992, is based on the diaries and letters of the author's greatgrandmother. It deals with a teenage girl who has two boyfriends, both fighting for the Union.
