I haven't seen the movie and will probably wait for the DVD, however, I do have some comments/observations. First, the reason they are making remakes is because the writers in Hollywood are to freaking stupid to come up with something original.
Secondly, the premise, as I understand it, doesn't make sense. How can humans polluting earth pose any threat to these aliens light years away? The only way it makes sense is that they plan on colonizing earth and want a pristine planet when they get here.
Thirdly, "Reeves did a good job of presenting someone who looks human who isn't human." Ahh, Terrahawk, you trying to tell us something?? Pod person perhaps.??

Nah, niccolom, I was just pointing out that casting Reeves played to his limited talents. Really, the vast majority of actors in Hollywood are only good at playing certain parts. The successful ones capitalize on that. The ones who forget it end up embarrassing themselves.
A lot was left hanging by the movie, but I think the aliens saw it more as protecting a scarce resource, i.e. a planet that could support life. Think of it as a tailored Prime Directive. They won't interfere as long as extinction of the entire planet isn't threatened. I've probably just spent more thinking about it than the writers.

You think the writers are responsible? You obviously have no idea how things works in Hollywood. It's producers and studios who come up with projects built on existing properties, then hire the poor screenwriters who would rather be writing original stuff, but no one will make original stuff and they have to eat.
Then, having been hired by producers because they can do something producers cannot, screenwriters get overruled and forcibly rewritten by those same producers... and the director... and the stars and their agents... until they want to cringe at what's been put on-screen in their name.
Rule#1: Never blame the writers. Blame the people with power.

One would think that they could. Personally, I would have left the motivations of the aliens a bit more vague and morally questionable (although they are definitely morally questionable in either movie). The problem with both films is the assumption that the aliens are right and therefore any and all actions are deemed appropriate. If you make the actions of the aliens questionable, you can create a much more interesting film.
