I can't take these anymore on the seemingly endless array of oldies stations in town.
Background: Currently, I play in a neighborhood coed league with DF, Joe. Five girls, five guys. Always a girl shortage. Thus, my job is therefore to run around while yelling. The other players, who know how to play and are actually coordinated, actually play. But it has taught me a bit about soccer.
And thus, combining the two (songs that need to be retired and my new knowledge of soccer) the 'World Cup' of generic oldies comes down to this final four. Scoring any goal (good song - against opponent/bad song - own goal) results in a demerit. The teams and their squads:
.38 Special
Hold On Loosely, Wild Eyed Southern Boys, If I'd Been The One, Caught Up in You, Fantasy Girl, Same Old Feeling, Back Where You Belong, Stone Cold Believer, Teacher, Teacher, Like No Other Night, Rockin' into the Night
Bob Seger
Night Moves, Turn the Page, You'll Accomp'ny Me, Hollywood Nights, Still the Same, Old Time Rock & Roll, We've Got Tonight, Against the Wind, Mainstreet, The Fire Inside, Like a Rock
Foreigner
Juke Box Hero, Hot Blooded, Cold as Ice, Head Games, Waiting For A Girl Like You, Urgent, Double Vision, I Want To Know What Love Is, Say You Will, I Don't Want to Live Without You, Dirty White Boy, Feels Like the First Time
Eagles
Take it Easy, Heartache Tonight, Lyin' Eyes, I Can't Tell You Why, New Kid in Town, One of these Nights, Tequila Sunrise, Take it to the Limit, Get Over It, The Best of My Love, Long Road out of Eden
Semis:
.38 Special vs. Seger: While the Seger squad snoozes, .38 Special defensive back Wild Eyed Southern Boy knocks in an own goal in the 63rd minute. Seger wins 0 to -1.
Foreigner vs. Eagles: Though Foreigner midfielders Double Vision and Feels Like the First Time energetically control most of the game, their pedestrian skills prevent any real threat. Tequila Sunrise (actual good song) steals a loose ball from Cold as Ice in the 81st minute and knocks in the loser. Foreigner wins 0 to 1.
Finals:
Foreigner vs. Seger: Foreigner energetically controls most of the game with vibrant if not futile efforts from Head Games, Hot Blooded, and Urgent up front, along with the typical strong performances from Double Vision and I Want to Know What Love Is in the midfield. Ineptitude reigns in the red zone however, stray crosses missing their player, ping-pong style miscues bouncing out of bounds, and etc... (see Major League Soccer for details).
Meanwhile, Against the Wind, Night Moves, and Mainstreet launch desperate counterattacks that are woefully lame. In the 83rd minute Turn the Page tackles the ball from substitute striker Dirty White Boy and backpasses to goalie Like a Rock, who is caught napping and watches the rock roll lazily by for the own goal. Foreigner takes the crown 0 to -1.
Any questions? Good. I feel better.

Actually Seger would have one had "Takedown" shown up. However, he was distracted by Eddie Murphy antics.

The long version of "Nights in White Satin" could beat any of these other guys hands down. |

I love how the "progressive FM" radio of the early 70s became the "rock radio" of the late 70s/early 80s which then became the "classic rock" radio of the late 80s to present, all without changing their play list.

| I have to point out that this is not the original band's fault. They composed and recorded catchy songs and played them well. Its the lazy and unimaginative radio stations that have decided to play them over and over ad nauseum. Also the new pop music consists mostly of cheap dance pop designed and severly calculated to appeal to 12 year old girls. Its simply awful. These older recordings seem great and classic in comparison. But there is so much more out there that is ignored. |

| Incidentally, Knights in White Satin is a complete ripoff of an earlier song by the Byrds called "I Knew I'd Want You" composed by Gene Clark. Knights uses the same unusual time signature, the same key, the same chords and the same tempo and the same lyric structure. The Moody Blues admit to it in the liner notes. Maybe Knights' pompous lyrics capture the thoughts of "album oriented radio" rather than the Byrds more pared down style but "I Knew I'd Want You" is rarely ever heard. |

All I know is, I'd heard the short version of "Nights in White Satin" quite a few times, but the first time I heard the song in all its, uh, glory, was around 1995. I was driving to a chess tournament (no, I wasn't in it, and I'm not a very good player), when I heard the song start up. I chuckled at how bombastic the orchestra sounded... and then the spoken-word part started up.
At first, i couldn't believe it. I thought it was some weird DJ. When I realized it was the same song, I said, out loud, "No way!" then nearly crashed the car because I was laughing so hard.
First impression was the best; my opinion of that thing is exactly the same now as it was then. |
