2009 is shaping up to be a hell of a year, eh?

Probably best known as Longshanks in the movie Braveheart.

For me, he\'ll always be Mr. Deveroux in the move Silver Streak.

Rest in Peace.

More sad news. For me it is his character John Drake in Danger Man from around 1963 that I remember most. Drake was a kind of James Bond but with a strict moral code. Lew Grade wanted more seasons of the show eventually called Secret Agent, but McGoohan was bored with it so he devised a single season story arc based on a real place. During the war The British arrested intelligence agents who sought to quit or retire, and held them in a village in Scotland. That was the germ of The Prisoner on of the very best tv shows of all time. McGoohan wanted something crazy and off the wall. Grade wanted more secret agents. So Mcgoohan had a secret agent (was it John Drake?) wanting to simply retire or so it seems, only to be kidnapped and held in a very strange prison village where some are prisoners and some are spys and who ever is in charge is always one step ahead of our hero. The show was not just exciting but McGhoohan used it to present very witty comments and satire on modern culture and politics. Just a great show all around.

His work on Colombo is also very entertaining.

May he rest in peace. I'm sure most of us remember "The Prisoner." Does anyone besides me remember a Disney picture called THE THREE LIVES OF THOMASINA?

Patrick McGoohan was beyond cool. Hopefully this will not afford him an opportunity to spin in his grave when the new Prisoner remake/re-imagining comes out.

Be seeing you.

It's a shame his good friend Peter Falk was diagnosed with Alzheimer's last year.

The 70's got most of the major players of the pre-war era. We are now looking at the obliteration of the post-war era.

Alas. He has taken the secret of what that last The Prisoner episode was supposed to mean to the grave.

On the other hand his pet project provided hours of thoughful fun to millions of people, so I think we should forgive him that. I also remember him from several supporting bits here and there, such as the warden in the Siegel / Eastwood Escape from Alcatraz film.

Thanks for the reminder, Neville. Escape from Alcatraz was one of his best roles on these shores. That and Braveheart.

If I had ever met McGoohan, I would've asked him one question. "Given that you've always championed the little guy (the underdog, basic human rights and freedoms, all that) in your interviews over the years... how come you're so good at playing evil?"

Did it never occur to you that George Orwell would never have written 1984 so concincingly well if he didn't have a strong streak of O'Brien in his personality?

It's the Mirror Mirror (Star Trek) effect- good people can empathize with evil ones but evil can rarely empathize with good.

"The Prisoner" was an absolute classic and kept me completely puzzled in my youth. He'll be sorely missed.
