Pip wondered in her Bloodrayne review why bad stuff can't cross running water. Traditionally it's evil spirit, magic, and suchlike that can't cross running water - and the reason for this is that running water flushes away infections (especially amoebas and bacteria). Disease was one of the major manifestations of being cursed, so... (the same reasoning goes for salt, BTW.)

I think I can kind of give an explanation on why it was in the game.
Jumping from platform to platform has been a staple of games since at least Atari. Usually acid, fire, spikes, or just a really deep hole awaited a careless player.
And since we're playing a kinda-vampire why not throw in some vulnerabilities. I suspect they read "Vampires and water don't get along" and added the damage thing so they would have an easy excuse for acid pits.
And Boll in his usual "skim the source" stile of film making picked it up. |
