As you guys may have noticed, I haven’t been posting much stuff lately. (Or maybe this hasn’t struck you as strange, since I tend to be erratic in that regard.) The fact is, I’ve been feeling sort of burned out lately.

This has been aggravated by other issues, such as an inability to get any money put aside. Luckily I’m fairly allergic to being in debt, so at worst I’m just perennially broke. However, for quite a while now, it seems like every time I get one bill paid off, another pops up. Literally. Last month, three days after paying off an installment insurance bill and a set of tires, my water heater committed suicide. (This is in no way intended, by the way, to get anyone to drop something in the tip jar. Quite the opposite, in fact. Please don’t.)

Long story short, a number of factors just seem to have made writing more an actual chore. Because of this, I’ve decided to take a sabbatical. At this point, I’m basically planning to take the rest of the year off. Although there have been several points in the site’s history when we were down due to things like computer problems, I’ve never in nearly nine years just taken an intentional break. I feel this is the time to do so. I believe a vacation will get my juices flowing again, and get me back to the point where I actually look forward to writing.

This decision was substantiated by replies from the two guys who, aside from myself, most regularly toil for the site, our volunteer proofreaders Carl Fink and Bill Leary. Carl had actually suggested I consider taking a break some time ago, when he perceived my interest was flagging. Bill, meanwhile, replied to the news by noting, “In a way, you're really on a sort of sabbatical right now. I think you just need to admit it to yourself or perhaps you just need to formalize it.” I hadn’t thought of it, but I think that’s exactly right.

I by no means intend to stop writing entirely. I’m going to reactivate the blog and hopefully post on a mostly daily basis (weekdays, at least), albeit in shorter form. I’ll continue to more briefly review films there, although probably more mainstream stuff, since any really bad movies I’d want to save for the main site. Moreover, I’ll occasionally post a piece here at Jabootu, for instance for the next B-Masters roundtable in a couple of months. I missed the last one, and don’t want to make a habit of it.

The sabbatical will officially commence when I finally get RVHorror’s (and my apologies to you, sir…again) sponsor pick review up. I’m out of town this weekend, but plan to get it up the week after that. Once that is taken care of, Kurt Draut is the only remaining sponsor we in the pipe, so he’ll have the ‘honor’ of being the sabbatical sponsor through the rest of 2006. He has requested a movie, too, and at some point that will go up.

For my part, I’ll watch some movies without having to worry about reviewing them. I’ll actually read a book or two. And, hopefully, I’ll be smart enough to get some pieces in the bank for when we restart in January.

I realize I’m really taking advantage of everybody’s patience here, and I do feel bad about that. No doubt some people will move on to other sites, and with justification. Heaven knows there are lots of very good ones out there. Some of you, I hope most, however, may choose to stick around, catch up on old reviews, and continue to use the message board. Feel free, encouraged, actually, to comment on blog pieces on the main site, or whatever else catches your fancy.

In conclusion, I want to thank each and every person who’s opted over the years to spend his or her free time here with us. The site is as much yours as mine, and I hope we get a chance to continuing entertaining you guys for many, many years to come. God bless.

Hey, Ken - Have a good break. THere's something delicious about kicking back and when that little niggling thought goes through your head "Hey, there's something I should be doing right now", telling it to get lost.

Yeah, it really comes down to the fear that if I make myself write when I'm not really digging it, I might get turned off to it altogether. I certainly wouldn't want that to happen.

Here's to a re-charged and fabulous year in 2007.

... dipping a tentative toe in the water...

Would you be amenable to guest reviews while you're on R&R?

Actually, we've considered that. The biggest problem is that we'd probably either get too few or (more likely) too many. However, before knowing what was going on, Chris Magyar submitted a Nukie review, so that will probably go up at some point.

I'll check with Paul. He had even volunteered to post them--relieving me of the task--but he needed any photos embedded, etc., so the piece would basically have to arrive ready to go. Again, I'll check with him and post further details.

Tork:

Remind of that later. I think there are six episodes left, so'll they'll either be odd or even months.

Thanks for the support, everybody. This wasn't a decision I made lightly, and your kind words alleviate a lot of my doubts.

Here's a great 2007. It's not as far off as we think.

Ken!

I have a nugget-sized review and a regular-sized review in the works. Actually, they were kind of languishing because they were priority two on the list with about 100 things competing for priority one. But now I'm motivated! If I get them done during your off-months, can we get them posted?

My email address is: evandergeld@yahoo.com if you care to reply privately. (Or use josephine_the_2nd@yahoo.com - my other for-fun address. I won't give out my phone # or work email on a public forum.)

Enjoy your time off and recharge the batteries. We'll still be here when you get back (and that's not supposed to be a threat or anything...)

I enjoy the site too much for it to become a chore to anyone. Have fun first and foremost!

Pip, that would be fantastic. If I knew me taking a break would motivate you to write more pieces, I'd have done it a long time ago!

I'll e-mail you. Thanks!

I can certainly sympathize with the way you feel, Ken, and I'll patiently await your return.

I understand completely. Hell, I still haven't finished my comments from the first T-Fest and T-Fest 2 is in 5 days. (I did go back and look at my notes though. They are entirely too cryptic to figure out now.) If Paul agrees to post guest reviews, I'll tackle a film or two.

Enjoy your break. I'll bring a couple books to T-Fest for you. I showed the line-up to Patty, we think we're ready.
