Funny. I recently felt the urge to watch the movie, didn't know why. I must have browsed through this board before and added to my mental list of "stuff to watch".
Anyway, being 31 at the time of my first viewing, I won't be as forgiving as most of you. People, this is one very bad movie. There are really many cringe inducing things on it, from the great ammounts of "cutesy" robot action to the frankly annoying John Barry score (and I'm a Barry fan), or the dated production design (I wish they had stuck with the 2001 style instead).
But what really made me hate it is how incredibly dull the whole thing is. It takes forever to get going (it's almost half an hour until they make it to the other spaceship), acting is as wooden as it can possibly get, except for Maximillian Schell and Ernest Borgnine, and the film lacks tension and life at any level. I can't believe anybody can find this film fun, really.
At least, I'll give the filmmakers some credit, not all of this movie sucks. The old school FX are pretty much great, from the spaceship models to the omnipresent black hole or the fireball at the film's climax.
And then there is the end. I thought it was f*cking great. Really. If only the rest of the movie had been as wild and inventive, then I could understand the cult status of the film. |

Fox, I don't know whether to be hopeful or crushed. I can forget my pipe dream of remaking this one; they're doing it for real.
I really really really hope the new version's makers (who are completing Tron Legacy as I speak) bat this one out of the park. |

Regarding my last post: these guys may indeed bat it out of the park, with at least two men on base. The link below leads to an interview, suggesting that the new film's director knows exactly how to do a remake right: keep whatever worked in the original, and fix what didn't.
