CobraCmdr - you aren't the only one. I find a lot of the 70's cartoons to be very poorly animated and not worth the effort. That said, I've also found when I go back and watch some cartoons I used to like from the 80's ("Centurions" for instance) they have dated badly as well. Time treats animation very badly, especially thanks to the introduction of anime to the world.

The only time I've ever found purposefully bad animation funny was in the Arfenhouse movies.

Most 70s cartoons are crap, and I'm from that era. Even then I preferred Rocky & Bullwinkle reruns to whatever brand new Scooby-Doo-inspired crap Hanna-Barbera had to offer. Worse yet were Filmation's offerings (Groovy Ghoulies, Sabrina The Teen-Aged Witch, The Archies). Only the animated version of Star Trek escaped Filmation's usual levels of crapitude, and even then it didn't miss by much.
But the '80s don't get off the hook either. For pure masochism trying watching an episode of Jem. Any episode. |

Heh. My girlfriend always watched that show when she was a kid. Seeing clips of it now, I just start whimpering from pink-colored overload.
Personally, even though a lot of '80s animation dated rather poorly, I'd still rank it above the '70s dreck. A dated '80s cartoon is still usually more charming than a dreary '70s one.
(Perhaps this is just my general hatred of the '70s culture seeping through.)

zombiewhacker, I watched Sabrina The Teen-aged Witch when it was first on and for that reason, I pretty much wanted to PUKE when I saw the live TV version! The latter was just a lot of crap thrown on screen, looking like the writers hated haveing to do the show and wanted to get fired!

ATHF never worked for me. Fact is, except for some parts of Robot Chicken...AS has lost me. Venture Brothers knew what it was, a Jonny Quest parody, and that helped focue the storys. Weird for weirds sake....Nope! Not intrested. SL 2021 lost its focue too. I sgree, when Capt. Murphy went to that big nuthouse in the sky, it wandered asray. Focue, people...focus! Thats what they need.
Yep....Sci-Fi channel was good once....ONCE!

Speaking of cartoons that met an untimely demise, here's one '80s show I'm ecstatic to announce has been released to DVD:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000A7BQOW/qid%3D1130403297/sr%3D11-1/ref%3Dsr%5F11%5F1/102-5986389-5870526
I daresay I'm probably one of the few (if only) Duckula fans on this board. Nonetheless, I remember it well. Never thought I'd see this show again. Note: This was a Nick cartoon, not a Cartoon cartoon (yuk).
Now if someone could only talk Spielberg into getting off his duff and releasing Tiny Toons and Animaniacs on DVD. I mean, Stevie, babe, come on, already. |

Count Duckula was wonderful as a villain on DANGERMOUSE, but the zanyness (and the impenetrable speech impediment) didn't translate well into being the lead in his own show.

| Well, I don't get TCN here in Canada, but I have noticed that a large proportion of new ones seem to think that ugly=artistic, in both design and content. I suppose this is not unexpected, considering many more "serious" art forms are under the same impression. |

I blame Tom Green and other post modern comics. I've been down for years on the 'Disgusting = Funny' school of comedy.

Actually, I think it can all trace back to the success of Animal House. Unfortunately, its imitators missed the point that the gags in that film were funny because people were going "I can't believe they did/said that!". (Not to mention it didn't push the bounds of the possible TOO far - I remember the look on my brother's face when my mom sighed nostalgically and said "I remember going to frat parties just like that!")
Nowadays, it's more "Yeah, I can believe those morons did/said that, because clearly nothing is beneath them." |

Hummm....that thought makes me think of Tom Wolfe's THE PAINTED WORD,and FROM BAUHAUS TO OUR HOUSE, where he slyly puts a shiv in the back of the "Artsy Fartsy". The no talent hacks who try to pass off poor quality images and boreing arcitecture as "THE thing to have." These clowns could make rich people with no confidence in their own artistic tastes, pay big bucks for stuff I could do. Stand on a ladder, drip paint on a canvas, i'm a GENIUS!....my galaxy spanning ass you are, Ed Harris!

Ha. As soon as it came out I rented Danger Mouse and my daughter loved it. Gave a copy to a friend as a gift and he called up the next week telling me never to do something like that again, 'cause all his kids say now is "Danger Mouse! Danger Mouse!"
So with four examples I can tell you that DM and CD go over very well with the young crowd (and yes, I will be sending him a copy of Count Dukula just to further his rage).
Nice to know some of the classics still are.

Having never seen Dangermouse, I never realized Count Duckula was a spin-off character.
As to those who suggest Duckula wasn't worthy of his own show, I politely disagree. OK, his show was no Family Guy, but it had a sly sense of humor. |

UPDATE: More on Adult Swim's upcoming show Boondocks:
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/10/30/arts/television/30ogun.html?adxnnl=1&8hpib=&adxnnlx=1130706034-/vcZhWALBuU7VgSrbc9Hnw
Quoting the NY Times:
"Cartoon Network pays Sony Pictures Television, producer of the series, an estimated license fee of $400,000 per episode. Add to that the millions the network has spent on marketing, including many billboards in New York and Los Angeles trumpeting the show's premiere on Nov. 6 in the late-night Adult Swim block, and The Boondocks becomes the most expensive show the network has made. (emphasis mine)
"'We don't have a lot of money, so we decided that for this year, we're going to put every dime we have into Boondocks,' said Mike Lazzo, senior vice president of programming and production at Cartoon Network."
Now calculate how many new episodes of Dexter, Samurai Jack, or especially Space Ghost: Coast to Coast that money could have funded. |
