Speaking of Boondocks, has this ever happened to anyone else:

You find yourself disliking a particular show/movie/song because it advocates a political message that you strongly disagree with. But when you explain this to your friends, even the ones who have the same political beliefs as you, they don't get it, or completely missed the intended message and can't understand what your problem is.

Meh, I'm not so bothered by the political message -- the strip itself is ocassionally even funny, which is more than I can say for Doonsbury which I gave up reading long ago.

However, the commercials CN has been putting on make it sound like an unfunny meandering political hate message with no real point or subtlety. I doubt if even people with the appropriate political point of view will watch much of that.

And multiple those times about a thousand to get how many episodes of Squidbillies or 12 Oz Mouse they could have made or times a million for Tom Goes to the Mayor. So it's not all bad.

Not to mention the fact that both Dexter and Space Ghost: Coast to Coast went downhill later in their runs, especially SG:CTC, which got infected by the same "unfocused wackiness in and of itself equals hilarity" that plagues most of the other Williams Street productions. Some to the extent that they don't even bother with anything else.

At any rate, judging by the ads I've seen, Boondocks is far and away the best looking show on Adult Swim that wasn't produced in Japan. It may well be the best animation on American television in years; I'll watch it just to support the fact that it isn't as ugly as sin.

Okay, so Cartoon Network is going to be showing movies every Sunday of this month. Makes sense right? I mean, they have access to the complete film library of Hanna-Barbara, Filmation, and Warner Brothers. Not to mention who knows what all else.

So what are they showing?

Sunday night, it's Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

Okay, it's partially animated and a really good film, albeit an odd choice due to it's heavier connections with Disney than any of CN's parent companies.

But one of the films is The Goonies. THE GOONIES? On what possible level could that make sense?

On a related note, TCM is supposed to show about eight or so Miyazaki films this January, including such works as Porco Rosso and Spirited Away.

My Neighbor Totoro
Kiki's Delivery Service
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away
Porco Rosso
The Cat Returns

What are the other two? Hopefully they aren't using "Miyazki" as short for "Ghibli" since I'd be really happy to see two more of his works imported.

Sadly, I strongly suspect they do mean Pom Poko and The Yamadas in which case why didn't they throw in Grave of teh Fireflies too?

Oh, duh. I drew a blank on Castle in the Sky and Naussica.

And I didn't mean to imply that Pom Poko wasn't worth seeing, even if it does include the bizarre scene of a racoon (tanuki, really) killing a construction worker with his testicles.

Not to mention The Castle of Cagliostro, it's not one of them being shown though.

According to the TCM website via Toonzone, the lineup is:

Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke - Jan. 5, 2006.
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind and Castle in the Sky - Jan. 12.
My Neighbor Totoro, Porco Rosso and Whisper of the Heart - Jan. 19. Pom Poko and Only Yesterday - Jan. 26.

So it was actually six Miyazaki films with three more from other members of Studio Ghibli.

Wait, did they really mean Whisper of the Heart or the sort-of sequel The Cat Returns? The former hasn't been released yet. The same goes for Only Yesterday.

Wow, cool news if this isn't just an import. I guess I can wonder if Totoro is the unreleased Disney version or the remarkably good Troma version.

Well, instead of being lazy I went to the TCM website myself and, sure enough, it is the Disney version of Totoro. Same with Whisper fo the Heart which has had an English voice cast listed at the IMDB since forever. Oddly, Only Yesterday is listed with eth Japanese voice cast, so I don't know what that means.

Apparently, it's going to be sub only while the rest of them are going to air in English and then have an encore Japanese presentation later that night.

Okay, who dissed Home Movies? Am I gonna have to start kicking ass?

Okay, the first season had some problems; they often went for gross-out gags just for the sake of grossness, but after they got into their groove it became the best sitcom ever.

Coach McGuirk is always hilarious, and Brendan and his friends present the most realistic portrayal of the artistic proccess I have ever seen. They occasionally tackle childhood really well too (The episode where Brendan has to spend the night with the obnoxious kid that wants to be his friend is perfect).

Seriously, if you watch it in the flash years and don't find it funny, you have no soul.

Lessee... As for Boondocks I thought it was okay, but not great. It looks awesome, of course, and there were some funny gags. We'll have to see what happens.

I did and will continue to do so on the grounds that:
  • The animation is awful, though it was admittedly less bad later on.

  • I hate the characters.

  • Said characters have hideous, hideous character designs.

  • [*]Did I mention the awful animation?[*]

Basically, you can chalk it up to my utter loathing of Squigglyvision. Though I still like it more than John Kricfalusi's work, which is one of the single largest contributors to the decline of American animation in my opinion.

Yeah I have to agree character design makes a big difference in animation. I love South Park, which has very simple animation, but I think Home Movies (and several other AS shows) just take it too far, with animation that is just plain unpleasant to look at. Venture Brothers is probably the best original cartoon in their line-up, and also features quality animation and actual plotlines.

I like Harvey Birdman and Venture Bros. How much foe f-----n' Boondocks?!? That's crazy. "We decided to put every dime we had into Boondocks.", well what if it isn't good and your viewers don't watch then you'll be stuck w/a bad investment. I must add my voice to the growing chorus and say that I HATE Ed Edd and Eddy, obnoxious, awful show in my opinion.
