We laugh not just because it's funny, but because it's true. (Any body know who said that?)

You could be right, I don't know.
The artical mentions the forthcoming Nancy Drew movie. You should read what's written on Mystery Net's Nancy Drew site, tar and feathers have been mentioned! I plan to write a review for my friends there, maybe I'll post it here, too.

I remember it being said by Al Capone (De Niro) in The Untouchables.
In one episode of The Simpsons, Fat Tony remarks that an Itchy and Scratchy episode is "funny because its true" and in another episode Homer says the exact same thing while watching some TV comic make a joke about a washroom being out of toilet paper. |

| My problem with summer movies is not knowing which one is going to turn good, but finding good alternatives to the real stinkers out there. Take Transformers. I'm pretty sure is going to suck, but unless I find any other interesting film that weekend, I'm going to end watching it. |

I think Cain said it to Abel... right before he clocked him. |

Neville, you do realize you don't have to go to the theater, right? *grin* You can always rent, say, Die Hard, fire up the DVD player, and have a much better time than the people paying eight bucks or more to see the latest Michael Bay craptacular. |

| Yeah, but I have the habit to go to the theatre almost every week. And I've got friends I only see in those occasions, too. |

Well, shared misery is lighter misery. Thats why i won't watch some movies with out "help", like Joel and the bots.

| Yeah, that I can understand. I've seen quite a few movies I'd never go to the theater to watch, except I was with friends or family. |

Thing that bothers me: there are usually lots of decent movies around, but people robotically go to see the big blockbusters.
I just saw "Ratatouille" this weekend, and it's a genine masterpiece of a movie. Partly through its sheer quality, and partly through its inherent message of not settling for mediocrity, that movie basically put me off seeing any more empty blockbusters this summer--Transformers in particular, which I was sorta into, now fails to engage my interest on any level.
However, there are a couple of movies worth checking out in theaters--if you get a chance to see "Hot Fuzz", it should scratch your blockbuster itch nicely while still being a legitimately great movie. "Knocked Up" is quite good, too. I hear "Once" is superb, and "Day Watch" is supposed to be a lot better than the flawed but entertainingly gonzo "Night Watch". You might also still be able to catch "Grindhouse" or "The Host". Sure, it's easier to just march into whatever FX-laden spectacle is playing in the megaplex, but why bother?

| You know, a few weeks ago I hated the idea of having to watch Transformers. But now I've heard it's having good reviews, and my mind refuses to accept it. How can you make a good movie about robots that transform themselves into stuff? And directed by Michael Bay? My head is about to explode. |

Methinks they are obviously cashing in on the nostalgia folks from my generation might feel for the cartoon we used to watch.
Honestly, I didn't think the cartoon "Transformers" was all that. Not long after "Transformers" came out, a slew of robot cartoons hit our shores. Some of them were as good as "Transformers", so not so much.
One that totally kicked "Transformers" ass was "Robotech". People actually died in "Robotech", which as a kid I thought was shockingly refreshing. You shoot at somebody with a gun, they die. I got it.
Important characters in "Robotech" would die. Dozens and dozens of people would die each episode, many of them in mid-sentence while talking on the radio. Pretty much the entire surface of the Earth was vaporized. Whole cities destroyed. I swear I remember a little girl picking daisys getting blasted to pieces as the city in the background got hit.
Pretty serious stuff.
In contrast, you had the Decepticons hatching some new plot each week to get more energon cubes. Starscream would bitch about something. Megatron would slap him down and Optimus Prime would try to do his best John Wayne impersonation. And everybody was equipped with weapons that weren't even as effective as a phaser set on "tickle".
A squadron of Robotech mecha would've killed all the Transformers in about 40 seconds.
But I only remember all of this because I'm really, really cool....

| I remember the Starriors getting a limited comic book series. Now, it's hard to take any story where the hero is named Hot Shot and the villain is named Slaughter Steelgrave seriously, but the story was quite impressive. It made me wish someone had done a movie out of the comic book; it would've worked, I think. Oh, while the comic book left room for a sequel, it ended its story pretty definitively. Hey, a self-contained story that doesn't need a sequel! Who'd'a thunk it?! |

Neville, you need to read this: http://www.aintitcool.com/node/33228
Even the most positive reviews of Transformers don't pretend that it's got anything to offer in the way of plot, characters, dialogue, or ideas. It's just a bunch of cool robots beating each other up, which is apparently enough to entertain some people mindlessly for a couple of hours. Although I've actually heard that there's a real lack of giant robot action for the first hour.
