That's a fair evaluation. Family Guy is stupidity squared... no, make that cubed.

It is pretty strange that South Park isn't on the list. As well as Batman: The Animated Series. But I imagine that every science-fiction and/or superhero show has a cult around it.

Sardu--Doctor Who is on the list, it's number 22.

I could see that "Heroes" will become a future cult show. Then again I might be wrong.

It's Coacoa Puffs, Bob. I have no idea why, but it fits the equation.

You could also make the argument that shows currently on the air first-run should be automatically disqualified. It's still too soon to tell whether the likes of Lost will have their "cult" followings years down the road. The Avengers, by contrast, has earned its place on the list.

BTW, those of you in the UK or nearby: do the original Ian Hendry episodes of Avengers ever play on TV over there? Are they available on DVD? Hendry's episodes have never been shown in the US. Not once. Most American fans of the series are doubtlessly unaware of the fact that when the show first went on the air, it was a buddy show... Macnee and Hendry.

My rule of thumb would be to ask a single question -- can you picture a group of fans getting together and organizing a convention centered around the show? Or at least distributing their own newsletters? If you can honestly say "yes", then you just might have a cult show on your hands. And of course, several of the shows listed above have already had their own fan conventions. I think RossM described it to a 'T'. Cult fans get together, write newsletters and fan fic, organize viewing marathons, argue for hours over esoterica, and otherwise just plain keep the show 'alive' even long after it's gone off the air. Many shows have fans, but only cult shows have followers.

Citizen Carrier mentioned Barney Miller, for example. While I agree that it was an above-average sitcom, I just can't see any kind of significant motivated fan base forming around it. But I could definitely see SCTV, Ren & Stimpy, and South Park there. And Futurama without a doubt! That show has as rabid a fan base as any I've ever seen.

Here's another show that's still alive in the hearts of its fans long after cancellation: The Tick. Spoooon!

As for zombiewhacker's argument that "first run" shows shouldn't be considered, I don't see why not. I think a show can have a cult following while still on the air. The Simpsons is in what year now? The 19th? That's almost a full generation! It's definitely been around long enough and has enough of a following to have developed a cult fan base. The fact that new shows are still being produced is just icing on the cake now. But I can't see LOST fans organizing their own conventions just yet (the shows promoters doing so, yes, but not the fans alone). That show needs more time to develop, IMO.

@RVHorror regarding Batman: The Animated Series. While it's an extraordinary show and definitely has a following, I think it would be hard to separate it from the larger Batman fan base. Can we legitimately call that show a cult classic on it's own?

Well, if that's the criteria, H.R. Pufnstuf definitely needs to be kicked off that list.

Oh man oh man, do I ever hate Heroes. I have no idea why so many seemingly intelligent people are enraptured by that show. I admit it was cheesily entertaining and exuberant for the first few episodes, but it burned off all of its goodwill and then some by the end of this season. I predict a MASSIVE falloff in popularity next year as the initial dorky thrill wears off and people start to realize just how sloppy and nonsensical the storytelling on that show is.

If it ever joins the ranks of cult faves, it will be in the same context as "Manimal" and "Knight Rider" and "The Brady Bunch"--so bad it's good.

By the way, they're shooting new Futurama episodes as we speak. But then, you guys probably already knew that.

No argument from me there, although you might, if you're generous, be able to make an argument for the Kroft productions as a whole. I remember liking the Far Out Space Nuts myself, though I all but hated most of the other stuff they put out.

H.B.,

Man does Fernwood Tonight bring back fond memories! I loved that show as a kid. Not only that, I actually taped it - not on VHS but on tiny audio cassettes that I still have a pile of in my basement!

For those not in the know, it was a spin-off from a now rightly forgotten soap opera parody - Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman - that starred one of Woody Allen's rare post-pubescent wives. I hated, Hated, HATED Mary Hartman, but Fernwood Tonight was hilarious. It starred two of the funniest, yet unluckiest, men in show business - Martin Mull and Fred Willard. Check out the Wikipedia run-down here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fernwood_Tonight

If there is anything worth releasing on DVD it is this show. To this day I remember when they interviewed a man who lost on Name That Tune. He bet that he could name that tune in 3 notes, and couldn't tell the difference between "Moon River" and "Goldfinger". (Think about it!)

And how about "It's Garry Shandling's Show" instead of Larry Sanders? ("This is the theme to Garry's show. The opening theme to Garry's show. Garry called me up and asked if I could write his theme song.")

Ironically, R. Dittmar, Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman did make TV Guide's list, but Fernwood/America Tonight didn't.
