Ironically, R. Dittmar, Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman did make TV Guide's list, but Fernwood/America Tonight didn't.
Oops, I didn't see it in the list.
In this instance at least you can read "cult" to mean "smug, pretentious crapola meant to allow coastal elites to feel superior to everyone else". It was a truly wretched show that should be avoided at all costs. As I mentioned above it starred Louise Lasser a woman who was one of Woody Allen's non-incestuous wives and dowdy and charisma free and seemingly zonked out on downers all the time. It was also filmed without a laugh track. And while this may not seem to be a big deal, when you are watching a show that is supposed to be funny but is not funny in the slightest, it would have helped to be clued in as to what someone somewhere thought was funny. |

| That's your opinion. I happen to think that waxy yellow buildup on a kitchen floor is hysterical. |

Hey, I was a lot less discriminating in my prepubescent years. An 8 year old with a space fixation will watch (and love) anything with rocket ships in it*. I'm sure I'd be horrified if I saw it now.
[*I've always loved space exploration, both real and imagined. I recall being glued to the TV both during the 1975 Apollo-Soyuz rendezvous and when the first images started coming back from the Viking missions in 1976. If it had space or spaceships in it, I loved it.]
I remember loving Fernwood 2Nite also. A parody of talk shows like Johnny Carson? Classic! It's only a dim memory in my mind now, but I recall watching it surreptitiously on a small portable B&W tv we had, because it was on past my bedtime.
And speaking of parodies, Soap has to be by far the best Soap Opera parody. It certainly deserves to be on this list more than Mary Hartman. I especially recall the stretch where Richard Mulligan's character was kidnapped by aliens and replaced with a double. UFO stuff was really hot in the late 70's, and it was quite a big thing to have something like that happen in the show. The fact that real soap operas started doing similar arcs later on makes it even more hilarious in retrospect.
Edit: wtf made the font come out so small? |

I've never actually watched SOAP, but do recall before it came out, there was all this controversy about it's "racy" content, and the pastor of the Baptist Church my mom would take me to had a sermon on it (and TV in general I guess -- do recall the line "Why watch DRAGNET? -- why not DRAG THE NET FOR JESUS?!!")

Zombiewacker : MY waxy yellow build up is not so funny. The comedy club banned it from open mic night.
Marvin the Paranoid Android to Buzz Lightyear "Too infinity and beyond-i've been there, its rubbish!" "Hoody Hoo, i waste 'em with my cross bow!" Bob Herzog- KODT

Any list of top cult shows of all time that does not include Blakes 7 is clearly composed by people who have no idea what they are talking about.
I mean come on, this was a show that managed to build up a fanatical cult in the US without ever being aired here! |

Blake's 7 episodes aired in the US on PBS, as I recall.
But you're right... B7 is the epitome of cult following. |

How dare you besmirch the beauty that is Lidsville, you cur!!
Oh, by no means am I disparaging any of the Krofft Bros. Saturday morning work. "Lidsville" with C.N. Reilly as the lightning bolt tossing villian was a classic. My personal favorite was the football helmet. Heck, I even liked "The Bugaloos" (of course part of that may have been due to the female Bugaloos' costume)
my eyes!! the goggles do nothing!! |

To my thinking, "cult status" must necessarily mean that it appealed to a smaller, more discriminating set of fans.
Twighlight Zone, bar none the greatest television show ever likely to be made (or is there some other show you can name that raises the hairs on your arm at least once every episode?), should not be on the list under that criteria. It had mass appeal--if my mother's word is to be trusted--and is one of those few instances when the masses "got it".
I have a cousin who maintains you can learn everything you need to know about living in America by watching Twighlight Zone and The Andy Griffith Show.
Maybe a few more British shows? Black Adder, Are You Being Served?, and Fawlty Towers are certainly candidates.
And I want to vote for WKRP in Cincinnati. If that's not "cult", I don't know what is. Come to think of it, I was watching a rerun of it the morning of 9/11 when my mother called me from work and had me change the channel to CNN...
Ditto on Fernwood2Nite, that was to tv talkshows what The Bob and Ray Show was to classic radio shows. |

| How about the original Outer Limits? I remember watching the series as a kid and found the shows to be very good (for that time period). Very different for what was normally on at that time (Gunsmoke, 77 Sunset Strip, etc) It had some very good episodes including one "The Soldier" which according to its author, Harlan Ellison was basis for the "The Terminator" movie. |

Huh?? WKRP was a huge hit when it went into syndication. Though admittedly it was cult when it first ran I don't think that counts...

When it went into syndication. While it was on network TV it was the red headed stepchild of the network (NBC?) and in the constant limbo of time slot moves. I remember reading that the ensemble cast had no illusions about their place in the scheme of things when Mary Tyler Moore spoke disparaging of their show in public once. If she didn't like it, then they knew they didn't have much time.
WKRP remains perhaps my all time favorite sitcom. Like Andy Griffith, it didn't rely on funny jokes, but funny characters. It never jumped or got stale like Three's Company, my friend's all time favorite sitcom. |

Someone once said, "Being calling a cult favorite is just a nice way of saying you have very few fans." Does Pufnstuf have any fans? Advice to TV Guide: if you must dredge the swamp of Sid and Marty Krofft to pad out your list, think the original Land of the Lost. But Pufnstuf? Sheeeez.
I was a fan because I had a mad crush on Jack Wilde who played Jimmy. {{{hangs head in reverie of shame and contempt for herself}}}
