To be fair, I didn't think Seagal was such a bad actor when he first started out. In Above the Law he was... okay. A little stiff here and there, and occasionally his face would register a blank expression when emotion would've been more appropriate. But on the whole he had good intensity, a presence, and unlike, say, Chuck Norris, he could rattle off a line of dialogue and not make it sound like he was reading off a dummy card.
His real problem onscreen was his surliness, that "I-just-sucked-on-a-lemon-and-it's-your-fault" demeanor that really turned me off the guy. In subsequent movies his seeming contempt for everything and everyone around him just got worse and worse.
That, and the fact that sometime between Above the Law and the present he seems to have swallowed Danny Aiello. |

That's a very good assessment I think.

So, is this the end of Seagal? A quick look into the IMDB andhis output seems to have slowed down. He's got two films finished or in post-production (I won't count The Untitled Onion Movie) and that's it. Both look like a desperate return to the kind of urban revenge action films that launched his career in the first place.
The good news is that Seagal could still be trying to leave with a bang, in yet another action movie directed by himself. It's called Prince of pistols, he's co-written it himself and is supposed to co-star B.B. King. The project is "in production", but the dedicated page says it's been pushed back.
I just lit a candle in my Jabootu shrine so it finally gets done. I suggest you all do the same. |

| The one and only. Guess he's run out of rap singers. |

Or maybe he's realized that young and thin co-stars make him look liked an aged hippo so it was time to get someone who would make him look young and virile in comparison.

And imagine the colateral damage: once the bad guys are defeated, Seagal and B.B. King can sing a duet as the credits roll. Or even jam together.

Yeah, what is the deal with all those rap co-stars he's been using? Unless I'm totally wrong, Seagal's traditional viewing demographic is not one likely to be besotted with love for rap music.
Very bad career decisions.
And his fighting style has changed. In the early days he stuck pretty much to aikido moves. This was interesting to watch because nobody else in martial arts movies used this unusual technique. Aikido is strictly a martial art that uses hands and arms and upper body. There are no kicks involved, as that is considered "uncivilized".
Nowadays, he kicks. In Exit Wounds they even did some horrible stunt double/CGI thing where he does a kind of handstand and kick thing that would've been difficult for Jackie Chan in his prime. |

He should team up of Tom Laughlin and make "Steven Seagal vs. Billy Jack," a knock down, drag out clash of conspiracy theories. May the most violent pacifist win!

Oh man- the self-righteousness of that pairing would make the universe collapse in on itself. I sure do love the thought of a violent pacifist cage match though. Maybe the winner could then be fed to a lion.

Well, to keep the universe from collapsing in on itself they can bring in William Shatner to be the ref.

Actually, the best movie Seagal ever worked on was the one he didn't act in. The Challenge starred Scott Glenn, based on a screenplay by John Sayles and directed by John Frankenheimer. Seagal was fight coordinator on that film, teaching Glenn some of his aikido moves and probably passing on a fencing technique or two.
If Seagal was smart (end sentence here) he'd remake The Challenge, leave Sayles' script more or less alone, and beef up the sword battles scenes. Because if there's one area where Seagal has consistently shortchanged himself, it's that he doesn't get into nearly enough melee action.
A younger, trimmer Seagal would have made a great, if surly, swashbucker. Alas, alas... |

How about if Rambo were stalking the two of them? |

As I read this thread, I realized anew how much I love you guys.
Come what may, we'll always have Seagal.
PEGGY: I don't see how having a girl on the team would ruin it. Did a woman judge ruin the Supreme Court? HANK: Yes, and that woman's name was Earl Warren.
