I was reading Wikipedia's article about It's a Wonderful Life.

And I found this bit of info:

On November 13, 2007, Paramount will release a two disc special edition DVD of the film that will have both the original theatrical black and white version, newly restored, and a brand new third colorized version, the first in high definition, produced by Legend Films using the latest technology.

Good or Bad?

If I find out Ted Turner is behind this, so help me god.

I'm pretty much OK with colorizing, as long as they offer the original version alongside it. To some extent my opinion depends on the film, and how much thought and artistry went into the original cinematography. Colorizing things like Citizen Kane or Third Man would be sort of criminal, but when they do stuff like Three Stooges shorts, what the heck!! It's not taking away the option to view the original, so I choose to regard the color versions as interesting curiosities.

Colorization is awful. Even when a movie was made in black and white for budgetary reasons it should not be colorized. Once the decision was made for B&W everything is geared to b&w, the costumes, makeup, lighting, camera angles, everything. Digitalizing color, based on guesses, not from the director, but by technicians, ruins the picture. Its wrong even if the director himself does the coloring.

And contrary to popular believe, turning off the colour of your TV doesn't restore the original picture.

Talk about putting lipstick on a PIG!

I remember when Turner was promoting colorisation; they did it to a Honeymooners episode and it looked like a four year old colored it with Crayolas!
RossM is right about the lighting and stuff, the (IN)famous colorisation of The Maltise Falcon looked too bright, even the night scenes, while Topper Takes A Trip has scenes that look like a CARTOON!

I say it should be used to restore old color films.

In The Reagan Diaries, Reagan makes an entry in '88 about Jimmy Stewart asking him to pass legislation banning colorization. The entry ends with "I told him I'd see what I could do."

I agree with Greenhornet. There are many silent films out there that were originally showed with tinted frames, and they won't be restored.

But of course, it is more profitable to colorise popular B/W films and use the controversy as free publicity.

Yes, I know, this is a business, not a museum, but it still drives me mad.

Remember when they colorized an old B&W Frank Sinatra movie... and gave Old Blue Eyes brown eyes?

The most atrocious colorization I ever saw was in the move Destination: Tokyo.

A submarine movie about a American Sub that sneaks in to Tokyo harbor to gather intellence for what looks like the "Doolittle Raid".

In the colorized version, they made all of the torpedos bright yellow. I thought that was stupid. I'm surprised they didn't go all the way and make the submarine pink.

To colorize a movie they fade out the blacka nd white to almost nothing and then guess at the colors. Thus truning down the color on a tv set does indeed not restorre the origional movie. Thankfully colorization only works on a tv version of the movie and the origional film remains intact.

I heard, from a man who knows quite a bit about film, that they colorized THE MALTESE FALCON and made Bogart's jacket blue. A few days late, the jacket was sold at a memorabilai auction-and it was brown.

Wasn't there a pink submarine in OPERATION PETTICOAT?

As I recall, shortly before Orson Welles died, he asked a friend to do him a favor: make sure Ted Turner didn't get "his G--damned crayolas on my movie." Three guesses what that movie was.

Welles was lucky. When he'd first started making Kane, he'd had a clause in the contract: he had final cut (unheard of in 1941), and no one could touch the movie without his permission. Turner tried to find a way around it and still colorize it, but apparently someone got to him and informed him if he succeeded, no one in the world would ever have any respect for him again.

Thank God for small favors.

I must beg to differ...

Seeing Moe with blue eyes would freak me out.

And would Larry's and Curly's mugs bear the red imprint of incessant slaps?

Please keep your stinkin' Sharpies off my Stooges!
