The version of Flash Gordon on the scifi channel. This show is done on the cheap with the silliest special effects ever. The lighting is so washed out that its often difficult to know who is in the scene and who is speaking. Rather than capture Raymond's elegant style as the 1980s movie did, or some of the wit as the old serial did, it just copies other scifi shows like Sliders and painkiller Jane (which itself copies Heroes). The acting is one note as every character is written the same, the plotting is plain cliche and stupid. This Flash Gordon is a Jabootu treasure.

What else did you expect from the scifi channel? They have been happily providing Jabootu fodder for years.

Ah, but this begs the question of what was the worst sci-fi tv show before this?
My vote is War of the Worlds, the tv series. You know, the one where the entire world seemed to have forgotten that it was nearly destroyed by an alien attack back in the 1950s... |

As a kid I totally dug the old War of the Worlds movie. But even then, when I saw the series, only two things jumped out at me. How exactly can one of those Martians squeeze itself into a human body? And why do all the guns have their muzzle flashes cranked up to 11?
I don't watch much sci-fi that doesn't have "star" somewhere in the name, so my reportiore is limited - but as for past shows, I remember feeling hugely let down by Andromeda into its third season or so, and gave up on it.
All I've seen of Flash Gordon was a promo running one week where there was a double of him, and some woman is deciding which one to shoot. Overall it just looked really generic. I've seen several clever ways to do scenes like that, but just from that ad, I'd suspect that FG didn't use any of them. Can somebody confirm if they had a good twist on it? |

Great Bird Of The Galaxy Gene Roddenberry unleashed some truly heinous shows on the world in between Trek:TOS and the movies. Stuff like Planet Earth, Genesis II and The Questor Tapes. I know the fan boys over at IMdb love to give all these failures 10 stars like they were bricks of manna falling from heaven but my memory of them was that they were all appalling. Of course, it has been a long time since I've seen any of them, so if anyone remembers differently let me know!!
Seems like the Planet Of The Apes series was a big turd as well, IIRC.

Let us not forget Automan and Manimal. This new Flash Gordon is in that league of crappiness. I hope that it does not dissuade people from checking out that outlandish 1980 movie which was not a commercial or critical success but really captures Alex Raymond's elegant style, or his origional comic strips, or the three very witty 1936 serials with Buster Crabb. Incidently the great score of the 1980 movie was composed byt he rocka nd roll group Queen.

OMG, that's right! I just watched JoSC recently. Stunning, epic, Jabootu badness. And with Jimmy Doohan and Sid Haig, even. Frickin' AWESOME.
Hey, let's not forget Sid and Marty Krofft, either. Far Out Space Nuts?? Lost Saucer? That stuff made Filmation look like Kubrick.
BTW, JoSC was allegedly the most expensive Saturday morning show produced up to that time. Wrap your head around THAT one! *g*

Like that other comic strip series Buck Rogers in the 25th Century with the fondly remembered Tweeky character. That was also done on the cheep and looked like a sort of live action Yogi Bear cartoon. I think that was Glen larson if memory serves.
And don't forget Space 1999 by ian and Sylvia Anderson. It was tough to tell the difference between that and on of their puppet shows. I haven't seen UFO since I was a little kid and so I don't have any real measure for it but as a little kid I loved it.
This Flash Gordon is worse though.

| Buck Rogers! Thanks for the bad memories. I tried to watch it a few times when I was on my early teens, and even then it looked retarded, specially the robot and its annoying bidibidibidi sounds. |
