Erin Grey was, and is, hot though.

That was Gerry Anderson I mean. The acting and characters in Space 1999 were so wooden that they might as well have been wood as the characters in their puppet shows. Space 1999 is to my eyes just about the worst scifi ever on tv. It was dramatically idiotic as it never even lived up to its own pretenses and was constantly self contradictory, was bereft of ideas, and so badly performed and filmed that just takes the cake for TV crappiness. The women in it were not even good looking, as they were on UFO.

Man, I was with you up until the end there... I tried to watch Space:1999 a couple years back (I loved it as a kid) and the WTF!?? factor was off the charts. Bad acting, awful writing, nothing made any sense! And even as a kid the whole "Moon pushed out of orbit by a nuclear waste explosion" thing made my head explode. Not to mention that, like, the next day they were out in uncharted regions of the galaxy... how fast does the Moon travel, anyway? Warp 9??

But the women comment- even a middle age Barbera Bain is a certified top tier hotty in my book. *g*

Barbara Bain? Naw...not for me. The alien gal in the second season, now that I could get behind.

QUARK. May, was I disappointed at that.How many attempts at Sci-Fi comedy were there? WEIRD SCIENCE worked for me...you?

Didn't Space: 1999 get the MST3K treatment once?

I always wondered how many of those ships did they have, eagles, I think they called them. They kept crashing or exploding but there were always more and more. Since they had an unlimited supply of them what was the point?

For Scifi comedy I can think of three good ones: Red Dwarf at its best was hillarious and Lexx, especially in the 4 pilot films they did and in its first and third seasons. The water and sand planet business wasnt funny or interesting to me. Farscape also has its outlandish Austrialian laugh out loud humor. Remember My Living Doll with Julie Newmar? Now there is hot stuff.

I've been re-watching Red Dwarf these last weeks and it holds up pretty well. Rimer (Chris Barry) is pretty annoying in series 1, but he gets better as the seasons go.

Is the original Star Trek still watchable? I wouldn't want to ruin my childhood memories. I went through the movies with the original cast recently and some of them didn't stand the test of time well, specially The Voyage Home.

Haven't seen the original series in a while. I suspect it hasn't aged well, and I'd probably find it pretty naive now. But the best of the lot should still be pretty good. Episodes like "City on the Edge of Forever", "The Menagerie", the pilot episode, etc., should still be more than watchable.

Yes, there are several episodes that have stood the test of time (especially for the performances). As mentioned, earlier, "City on the Edge of Forever" is an excellent example. Like many of the episodes of "The Twilight Zone", some things are timeless.

The origional star trek series still charms because of teh performances and characters. All the others seem to be rather drab in their acting, story telling and characters. They all seem to be the same. The best of the shows like Trouble With Tribbles, City ont he Edge of Tomorrow do hold up very well.

Pish tosh!

Lost in Space has aged better than any of them! It's like they were channeling Arthur C. Clarke, it was such good science fiction!

@EricB:

Irwin Allen and Sherwood Schwartz. Two geniuses who, thankfully, never decided to do a science fiction show together.
