Chris Pine!
Chris Pine?
Yes, according to the IMDB. Pine will fill Captain Travelocity's shoes in the next Star Trek movie.

Too bad... I was really hoping for Matt Damon as Kirk and Ben Affleck as Spock.

The Trek fanchise really needs to lay dormant for a generation. They need to clear the poisons that were Voyager, Enterprise and the last couple of Next Generation films from its system.

The reason why I'm certain that this movie will crash and burn (and why someone at Paramount with a single functioning neuron will certainly pull the plug before production) is that the characters of the original Star Trek have been linked to the actors who play them for forty years. This isn't like switching out James Bond every decade; William Shatner IS James T. Kirk. Leonard Nimoy IS Spock (even he had to admit that). There can be many captains of Star Fleet vessels, but trying to get new actors to fit into roles that are so deeply infused with the actors who've played them is beyond foolhardy.

It's similar to the "Enterprise" fiasco. Trek really can't go backwards because of all of the continuity issues. EricB is right, they need to let the series lie dormant for a decade. Some new blood and new perspective will help rejuvenate the series.

It looks like they've cast another young buck as Dr. McCoy. Another pretty face I've never heard of named Karl Urban (frankly all these post-WB pretty boys kinda look alike to me):

Dr. MCoy should be at least 10 years older than Kirk, but this guy only looks a few years older than the pretty face they cast as Kirk.

And, hell, even the original series was straining the audience's suspension of disbelief having the flagship of Star Fleet being comanded by a guy in his early-mid 30s. How the hell are they going to try to explain some prettyboy in his 20s having such a command?

Oh, I've heard of Karl Urban, all right... he was Matt Damon's arch-nemesis in The Bourne Supremacy and he also played Eomer in Lord of the Rings. (Gimli: "Give me your name, horse master, and I shall give you mine." Eomer: "I would chop off your head, dwarf, were it a bit higher off the ground.")
He is, however, an awful choice for McCoy. Simply the wrong physical type. Of course Kelley, like his compatriots, would be a tough act to follow anyway... |

A bad trekkie nit-pick here, Enterprise wasn't the flagship of the fleet in the original series. That only came about in The Next Generation. Of course, it was ridiculous that you would only have a captain on the flagship.
I thought this movie was to take place at the academy?

Still, how many captains of modern air-craft carriers (probably the closest thing our military would have to a "star ship")are in their early 30s (sorry I'm not that knowledgable on ranks in the Navy so if some other rank commands an air-craft carrier just replace my "captain" with that rank).
Regarding the Star Fleet Academy plot ... so they all knew each other in the academy and socialized with each other (though there must be at least a 10-15 year range in their ages if you figure everyone from Checkov to Spock and McCoy, hell, make it a 20 year age range) and they just happen to all become the bridge crew on the Enterprise 10-15 years after their academy days?

The thing might have worked if they ditched some of the younger characters like Chekov, Kirk and Uhuru and simply made it an Enterprise adventure with Captain Pike and younger versions of Spock, McCoy and Scotty. It might not have been great but it would have been much less in the shadow of the original cast.

Of course only a handful of people would pay money to see a Captain Pike movie, so it wouldn't be economically viable to make one. Which just brings me back to the "let the thing lay dormant for a while" idea.

I thought this was supposed to be a Starfleet Academy film. Kirk wouldn't have a command that young, and we know he wasn't on the Enterprise. If they try that drastic of a ret-con no one is going to go see it.

He was also on Xena--playing Caesar And again he was the main character in the movie "Pathfinder"
