Every year around this time the bargain bins at my local supermarket fill up with Halloween sound FX albums. Back in the day it was vinyl and 8-track, today it's CD, but whenever I decide to pony up the cash for one of these collections, I always end up disappointed. At best, and I use the term advisedly, the CDs are collections of library tracks that have been used in horror B-movie after B-movie since I was knee-high to a bat (the howling wolf, the screaming woman, etc.) Even those are a growing rarity these days. More common are amateurishly produced "effects" CDs that sound like they were recorded by one guy with a mike, an '80s synthesizer, and way too much time on his hands. Any suggestions out there on any Halloween sound FX cds that are truly worth purchasing?

While we're at it, (and to keep this thread from grinding to a screeching halt), please chime in on any other Halloween-tide items and gizmos you've purchased, the good experiences and the bad, whether they be those goofy talking-light up-singing decorations they're selling now, or bad taste practical joke items you spotted in the mall, or maybe even ruminate on some of the bargain basement DVD collections they toss out this time of year (you know, 50 horror movies for five bucks featuring a bad 16MM to DVD transfer of Night of the Living Dead or whatever...)

I don't have anythiing noteable, but I've always found the Johnson Smith catalog a treasure.

Hear hear. Johnson Smith rocks! Call me weird, but I've kept JS catalogs from as far back as the 70s just so I can flip through them now and then. Lots of great, crazy, weird stuff from yesteryear.

Funny you should meantion it, too. One of the few Halloween FX records I treasure is an old 33 1/3 vinyl that JS sold exclusively back in the 70s.

(My other fave would be '69 Disney's Haunted Mansion soundtrack LP with Ron Howard and Thurl Ravenscroft. Great stuff. Sadly, neither the JS nor the Disney vinyl is available in CD. More's the pity.)

I have the Ron Howard/Haunted mansion recording! I wish I knew where it is now. Chef Mayhem's Haunted Mansion site (Doombuggies) has excerpts from the record as well as some footage from the TV special from it's opening season.

Last year somebody posted the Scooby Doo/Blair Witch parody. I haven't looked to see if it's still up.

Yep. The Doombuggies link is here:

One favored ritual of mine back in childhood was to play the Lakeside Haunted Mansion board game with friends with the Ron Howard record album playing in the background. Good times.

Never heard of Halloween Treat personally, but you can find a corresponding thread here:

Oh, and since I'm linking today:

Haven't ordered from them in years, so I can't speak to their customer service, but merely browsing the assorted goodies posted for sale is enough to bring back fond memories.
