Neville, I'm afraid that you've gone too far now. [...] No one gets to insult The Longest Day. [...] You can insult my country, my politics, and my religion. [Starts to wonder how big Neville really is] But any war film that actually makes the French not look like the French deserves absolute respect. [Decides that this won't be a fair fight anyways. Losers fight fair.] I'll have to come visit you soon. :-)
Really? I can do that? LOL I'll remember next time politics become the subject of our discussion.
I'm a big guy, BTW, but a rather mild mannered one, so our encounter will be rather anticlimatic and dull. Just like a movie we both know. |

They did have a plan. It was called Reconstruction. And having somebody explain the complexities of Reconstruction to a newly freed slave on a street corner is a bit daunting.
Were I considered somebody else's property, there are certain upheavals and tumults I would look forward to.
That is unless I'd been brainwashed throughout the course of generations with Stockholm Syndrome to identify with my ordained place in society as property. To reduce the dignity of a human being to a state in which he accepts that he is something less than God intended us to be is the most racist thing I can think of.
Were any of us removed from our current status as free indivduals and placed into slavery, we would resent those who did it for our entire lives. And we would no doubt cheer any army or force that came in and destroyed our masters.
As we are free men and women, we should naturally be appalled by any system or society that lasted so long that generations of slaves were eventually acclimatized and accepting of something any of us would fight to the death to prevent being done to our person.
But we were born into freedom and the slaves were born into their state. Let us not make ignorance of the dignity entitled to all of us simply from having been born into some kind of virtue.
Yes, the caged canary sometimes does sing. When you think about it, that is the saddest music of all.

quote: They did have a plan. It was called Reconstruction.
And contemporary documents stated that they would "reconstruct the south on the NEW ENGLAND pattern". "Reconstruction" is a misnomer, they set out to remake the southern SOCIETY, not repair the damage done durring the war. The plan was mapped out by Lincoln himself in 1862 and included denying our leaders their Constitutional rights. Most people wald saw that because the South had "commited treason" by secceeding, we didn't deserve any rights, but the north could never prove that seccession was unconstitutional. They tried to make a case. But THREE special prosecuters told the government that they had no case and if they tried to pursue it, they might end up recognising the CSA. The third prosecuter told them to let the WAR decide the case. So much for "the South chose to decide the case by war".
Why do I seem so bitter? Because more than a hundred years later, we are STILL being degraded and insulted by the northern people!

| Yeah, that's why one of you gets elected president every four years. Because we despise you so much. |

Sir, we're discussing people that died a long, long time ago. Not anybody living today.
