Gotta defend CE3K on this one. The scientists on the ground remark how the abductees "haven't even aged." I thought this was a subtle pointer — and a good one — that the aliens are really alien. They don't have any concept of time, at least not the way we look at time, so they didn't realize that taking people up then returning them decades later would be a problem.

Mary Poppins, on the other hand... ugh. Outside of maybe four songs the musical score is completely unmemorable. I watched it in a theater as a pre-schooler and it bored me silly.

Ever hear Louis Armstrong sing "Chimchiminee, Chimchiminee?"

Sorry Brad, but I have to disagree with you here. There can only be two reasons as to why they haven't aged. Either they were traveling at near the speed of light or they have some method of preventing aging. In the first case, they have to realize the relativistic effects of such travel. If they don't, then they have to be some of the stupidest aliens ever encountered. If they can prevent aging, then they know that the people left behind will continue to age. The only tenable explanation I can think of is that the aliens don't have the same understanding of relationships as we do. They either remain connected while apart (some sort of mental bond) or it just doesn't matter to them.

When I was in Baghdad in 2005 I bought the entire first season of Miami Vice.

It's not that I was just bored to death, but that I remembered how "sophisticated" the show seemed back in the 1980s....when I was a heck of a lot younger.

Man, did that show not age well.

Of course, it was only the first season.

Still, cop shows now seem so much more realistic (if less violent) and definitly more mature. Compared to CSI or Law and Order, Miami Vice comes off as pretty silly.

I agree. I decided to watch some old episodes of the show right before the Michael Mann movie opened in theatres, and only the ones in later seasons turned out to be watchable. The rest were rather corny and unoriginal, and much less flashy and violent than I remembered.

I think we're all in agreement on this one:

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

Still luv the theme song, though.

The Neverending Story. I really liked that movie as a kid. Rented it last year for the girls 'cause they hadn't seen it before...and wow it was not good at all. I would've blamed it on my being a kid, but I loved The Princess Bride and The Dark Crystal then too and they held up for me...

I, for one, would be interested in seeing Neverending Story with the original Klaus Doldinger score, rather than that God-awful noise Giorgio Moroder handed us (don't get me started on the theme song). A good musical score can lift a film up. A bad one can drag it down. This was the latter

I just came up with one more; it was on TV the other night, so I thought I'd share it:

Gone With The Wind.

Racist, superficial. Vivian Leigh (who in other movies could be a wonderful actress) was just hammy and over-the-top and her character was an absolute b****. Clark Gable as Rhett would squint and smile... and squint and smile... and squint and smile... and occasionally smile and squint. (A little of that goes a long way.)

Frankly, I don't this movie deserves its legendary status. Aside from the music and cinematography, this is little more than a tacky soap opera masquerading as a historical epic.

Methinks the wrong Victor Fleming movie won for Best Picture that year.

I've actually never been able to sit through Gone With The Wind in its entirety.

Ditto here.

I also sat through The longest day a few weeks ago, and although it's rather professionally done, I've seen traffic jams that were more entertaining than this. Even the uncut version of Battle of the Bulge is better, if only for the cheese factor.

I'd say most of the pseudo-historical war films of the 60s are rather bland and boring seen today, although they never were that great in the first place, but easily The longest day is the most excruciatingly slow and boring of all them.

Wow, I have never made it through GWtW either. Never even tried, actually. I have seen large chunks of it and it does nothing for me.

Neville, I'm afraid that you've gone too far now. [Quickly checks PriceLine for cheap fairs to Spain] No one gets to insult The Longest Day. [Wonders what he needs to take to deal with Neville's IKEA weapon/furniture] You can insult my country, my politics, and my religion. [Starts to wonder how big Neville really is] But any war film that actually makes the French not look like the French deserves absolute respect. [Decides that this won't be a fair fight anyways. Losers fight fair.] I'll have to come visit you soon. :-)

I can't accept the "Gone With the Wind is racist" line NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES I'VE HEARD IT BEFORE. Every time some one dismisses the movie as "racist" they always point out that the O'Haras' slaves were loyal to their white "family". Well, guess what? That DID happen in history!
Do you know what would be "racist"? This scene:

ABOLITIONIST: "You're free, go!"
SLAVE: "Go where?"
ABOLITIONIST: "Anywhere, you're free!"
SLAVE: "But, where will I go? Where will I live? What will I do? How will I feed my family?"
ABOLITIONIST: "Frankly darky, I don't give a damn!"

If you're going to over-turn a society of millions of people, you had better think your plan through!
