Real good book I read last year titled "Red Star Rogue" details an incident when the Soviet Union attempted to foment a nuclear war between the U.S. and China.

The Soviets learned of an intelligence estimate done by the United States in which they believed a nuclear attack would come in the form of destroying Pearl Harbor.

The author postulates that upon learning this the Soviets gambled and tried to take out two threats at one time.

What they didn't yet know about was our SOSUS sonar tracking system and our satellite imagery coverage.

We tracked a submarine from it's dock in Vladivostok to within launch range of Pearl Harbor via the SOSUS network. A satellite detected the plume of a missile launch, but the simultaneous heat signature of the missile engine exploding in the launch tube and destroying the sub.

The author is the first to bring this evidence to light.

He also suggests that this instance played a role in convincing the Chinese to take a more adversarial approach to the Soviets in the late 60s and 70s. Although the meeting was in secret, it is believed that we shared our SOSUS and satellite imagery data from that failed attack with the Chinese.

Sounds fantastical, doesn't it? But the Soviets had done other outrageous things. Attempting to assassinate the Pope being one of them...

You gotta love this line from the synopsis of AGAC

When 12-year-old Joshua Zuehlke, the son of fighter pilot William L. Petersen, takes a tour of a missile silo, he begins to take a negative view of nuclear annihilation.

He obviously had a positive view before that.

Here is my favorite:

But, before long, their idea gets paid forward through the ranks of professional athletics, devastating professional sports and flustering a shadowy businessman and President Gregory Peck, both of whom feel that the growing movement threatens their interests. "They want me to tell you that you're jeopardizing your country by not playing Little League baseball," Peck says of his advisors in a private meeting with Zuehlke.

Poor Gregory Peck. An actor of his stature had to say lines like THAT?!?!

By the way, is there any other type of "businessman?"

Ok, I never heard of that movie before but now I have and it sounds like the most ridiculous movie concept ever. It makes Superman IV seem like gritty realism.

Just think, if little Joshua had been a character in Left Behind he'd be the Anti-Christ.

Pip,

This is the first I've heard of this guy. I forwarded this to a buddy of mine who's a bit of a military buff and he pointed out that the world almost came to an end twice that year. Apparently, the Russkies panicked over a NATO training exercise and became convinced they were about to be attacked. Apparently, they went on full war footing and prepared to launch a first strike:

Just to help you sleep soundly at night, my friend thinks that there is still a pretty good chance that the Russkies will nuke us given how paranoid they remain to this day.
