Hey, guys. I was just outside chopping wood, getting my hands dirty, when a tree fell on me, shattering my leg in three places. No worries, I think I'll just walk it off. Say, did I ever mention that time I wrestled a grizzly bear to the ground while I was changing the oil in my car? Man, just thinking about it makes me want to grab a Bud about now...
Anyhow... now that I've beefed up my HE-MAN credentials (cough cough)...
... what are the movie moments that always leave you misty-eyed? Especially if you're not really the mushy type, yet one or two movies always get to you anyway?
If possible, let's make this spoiler free. If the scene in question involves the death of a major character, just allude to it.
Some of my top picks:
5. "His was the most... human." (Star Trek 2: Wrath of Khan)
4: "I'll never let go, Jack." (Titanic)
3. "My friends... you bow to no one." (LOTR: Return of the King)
2. "We are your symphony..." (Mr. Holland's Opus)
and number one on my sniffle-meter:
1. "I could have saved more people..." (Schindler's List)
'Scuse me now. I gotta go rebrick my house and then go hunt some wild boar.

Something actually got to me real recently and dang if I can't remember what it was. I do remember that it was a shamelessly contrived movie moment and I was pissed at falling for it *lol* Luckily I was by myself.
Oddly, most movies that make me emotional don't do it as a result of the content of the movie, it tends to be associations I have with the film. Like, say, I get teary at the end of Wizard of Oz more because it reminds me of being a little kid and watching it on TV and I get all nostalgic. And I always get kind of misty watching Fantasia because I have a weird empathy with the joy its makers must have felt creating it. It's hard to explain.

I can top that! The cartoon where the duckling mistakes a hungry cat for his "mama". Only some cold-hearted scumoid could not be moved by the duckling line "If mama wants a duck dinner, mama will get a duck dinner" and the cat's reaction to that.

It's weird the stuff that get me all misty-eyed. The ending of Braveheart had me blubberin'. Just realizing that the guy's sacrifice ended up paying off was overwhelming for me.
In a similar vein, the soldiers singing "Non Nobis Domine" in Branagh's Henry V always wipes me out.
Let's see....
Well, I'm not as enthusiastic over Field of Dreams as I once was (wayyyy too much nostalgia for the Sixties), but damn if I don't lose it when, well.... "You wanna have a catch?"
"Atta boy Clarence!" (If you don't know the movie, shame on you. Gets me every time.)
I'm with Zombiewhacker on Star Trek II, and on Return of the King, only it's the line, "It's time, Frodo," that does it for me.
Best recent choke-up moment: the pull-back on the Girl looking out the window as "Falling Slowly" plays in Once. |

Wow, hadn't thought about Henry V but that gets me too. Good on ya, Shakespeare (and Kenneth) *lol* My ROTK moment is "you bow to no one".

The end of BEN-HUR The end of I WANT TO LIVE! Practically the whole PORTRAIT OF JENNIE Ed Harris sinking down in the ocean in THE ABYSS "The Enterprise" sequence in STAR TREK:TMP
The music definitely plays a big part in the emotional response in a lot of these cases.

My moment in SCHINDLER'S LIST is when the kids in the camp have to run and hide in the depths of the outhouse.
(And yes to STAR TREK 2. You shoulda seen my poor kids when I showed that to them the first time -- not a dry eye in the house, and I had to promise that, Yes, Spock comes back in the next one.)

That moment is beyond tears. The little boy jumps down the outhouse-and the other little boys tell him "Its too crowde. Get out." |

The ending of Carlito's Way always gets me. Didn't expect that from a Brian DePalma gangster movie. I did the test with a friend of mine later, it was funny to see him grab the kleenex as if they were a lifesaver. Then he started cursing me.
And let's not mention Million Dollar Baby, alright? Didn't see that coming either, and no matter how great I think it is, I'm not watching that again. |

I'll see that and raise you Gandalf's speech to Pippin "White shores and beyond...a far green country under a swift sunrise"

Lon Chaney in Spider Baby - (as Bruno) When he knows that all is lost and consoles the children (with tears in his eyes) by telling them everything will be ok - just before setting off the explosion. It was noted that when Lon did this scene, the cast burst into applause and there wasn't a dry eye on the set.

As y'all know, I keep a pretty tight rein on my emotions but recognize that a fair number of movies can bring a tear or, more rarely, a meltdown.
Examples of the latter:
Passion of the Christ: total meltdown The Pianist: Crying to the point of the dry heaves of crying.
Examples of the former:
Across the Universe: the funeral scenes with the lady singing Crash: the little girl Brokeback Mountain: "Jack, I swear..." Titanic: Jewel goes kerpluck, descent into the icewater mansion to see Jack. Breakfast at Tiffany’s: Paul's comments at the end. Watership Down: "You've been feeling tired, haven't you? If you're ready, we might go along now." Grey's Anatomy: "If love was enough she would still be there"
TV show. Ok, now I'm getting obvious so I'll try to be more interesting. Here are some of the one's that surprised the clincal side of me that the emotional side of me was affected:
Return of the King: "Frodo, it is time." Choke. And then I'm thinking: Where's that come from?
Bladerunner: "All these things will be lost..." He's a villian, but...sniff
Gladiator: at the end of the closing fight. This can't be happening!
