Two movies are being considered.
“‘20,000 Leagues Under the Sea’ is a really fine screenplay, based on the great Jules Verne novel,” Raimi said of one of his upcoming producing efforts. “It’s currently in search of the right director for the project.”
Telling the tale of Captain Nemo and his adventures in the submarine Nautilus, “Leagues” would be getting its second take on the silver screen. “I’m a big fan of the first book, as well as the Disney movie that was made many years later in the 1950s,” he explained. “It’s screaming for a reinterpretation, because as great as the other picture was, it was 50 years ago now.”

Well when I stopped screaming "Sacrilege!!" at the top of my lungs it occurred to me that Rami is probably right. After all, 20KutS (and don't ya know they'll call it something like that) was old (albeit still damn cool) when I was a kid and I was born in '64. (Stop laughing!) As much as I admire his talents as a director I would put his chances of bettering the original at around .001% (although if they got Sam Neil to play Nemo... ????) but hey, it will work for the young'uns and we fogies will always have the original so no harm no foul.
As to the other, well the phrase "From the creator of Inspector Gadget!!" does not exactly inspire rampant confidence.

And while we are on the subject:
Universal and Imagine Entertainment will remake the 1970 sci-fi saga Colossus: The Forbin Project as a potential directing vehicle for Ron Howard, reports Variety. Brian Grazer will produce.
Jason Rothenberg has been set to write the screenplay for a movie to be called Colossus.

You're coming to hell with me Tim! And Ron Howard will be our tour guide.

On the positive side, Ron Howard's done one really good late-60s period piece and he's got the techno-whiz-kid joy to do a great job with Colossus.
On the negative side, Ron Howard always puts in the happy, crowd-pleasing ending for his movies and Colossus has a super-bummer ending. |

Colossus is one of those rare films where it doesn't treat the audience like idiots. The beginning shows Forbin locking down the Colossus computer complex. They never go back with some goofy, "We'll crawl through this extremely large vent and deactivate the system." It's just great watching as Colossus anticipates and counters every attempt to stop it.

I'm just saying...
I know we're scraping the bottom of the barrel to make 80's television shows in to movies.
But when you hit The Mysterious Cities of Gold, you're definitely digging below that barrel.

Maybe he'll try to spin the idea of the Earth being ruled by two supercomputers as a good thing.

Though with the end of the Cold War who's going to build the other computer? Back in the 60s positing the USSR as the US's technological equal was believable but who nowadays could play that role. Putin's Russia certainly can't and you'd be stretching it pretty far to use the Chinese.

| You could set it a bit in the future, China will be larger econimically then the US evantually, The entire project could be started as a attempt to avoid a new cold/economic war. |

But the EU isn't pointing any nuclear warheads at the US, nor is it likely in the forseeable future so it wouldn't qualify as foil in any believable Corbin remake.

Yeah, but it's the French and the British who have the nukes and I doubt that either one (particularly the French) are ever going to share them with any other country no matter how cosy the EU becomes. I really can't see Britain ever threatening the US with nukes. As for France, well maybe in the very distant future but even then their nukes a more of giant codpiece for their national ego rather than a real threat to any other nuclear power.
