Interested to see how it fares against Iron Man.

I don't think it will fare as well as Iron Man. After all, Speed Racer was popular when I was kid (back during the Pliocene epoch) and Iron Man is still familiar to the average audience. The only thing Speed Racer has going for it are the trailers - which frankly would have appealed more to the drug-centered folks of the 60's and 70's. Also, right now, Speed Racer is sitting at 30% on Rotten Tomatoes vs 93% for Iron Man.

I don't think I could handle 2 1/4 hours of those garrish colors without getting sick to my stomach.

That's what throws me. Do you really need a Speed Racer movie that lasts *over two hours.* Good grief, when did films get so flabby. And two-plus hours of that sort of visual overload might well alienate more than it excites.
At that length, the Mammoth Car better get more than a cameo.
My guess is that, as with any film that hits a very certain vibe, many who like it will love it intensely, and most who don't will loathe it to the same degree. Whether kiddies like it will speak much to its success, but given that, again, why make the film so long?
PEGGY: I don't see how having a girl on the team would ruin it. Did a woman judge ruin the Supreme Court? HANK: Yes, and that woman's name was Earl Warren.

Why, to make room for its big big MESSAGE, of course. That's the impression I'm getting from reviews. It sounds to me like the Speed Racer equation is roughly:
(Day-glo eye assault + epileptic seizure) x hypocritical anti-corporate sermon = rent the BluRay when it comes out to demo your system for 10 minutes and send back to Netflix.

Well, the MOST DANGEROUS RACE episode of SR ran three parts, so I can see where one can get 120+ minute movie out of ideas and story elements from the whole series.

I absolutely loved Speed Racer, but that was almost thirty years ago when I would rush home to catch it after school, right before Johnny Quest.
But now, there's not one thing in the trailer that makes me want to see this movie.

The main thing to watch out for is how Speed Racer simply doesn't "update" well. Anybody remember The New Adventures? If you do you probably remember hating it. Anybody remember Speed Racer X? I think aird for a month and a half before disappearing. I've seen a little of the newest attempt at a revamp, and it looks even lamer, like those awful Hot Wheels movies they used to show on Cartoon Network.

And they've done it again on the small screen too.

Saw SPEED RACER this afternoon. Didn't hate it but I sure didn't enjoy it. Left me feeling numb more than anything else. Felt totally detached from everything happening on the screen. Haven't seen a movie with that overstuffed, over long, and loaded with repetition since VAN HELSING. It's like the suburbs were straight out of "Pushing Daisies", the city was right out of ROBOTS, and the race scenes were just roided up Hot Wheels commercials. Having talking heads scroll across the screen looks cool so let's do it a hundred more times. It's been 15-minutes; time for another heart-to-heart talk between Speed and whoever. Kids are just going to love all those conversations about stock market manipulation too. This was a so-so 90-minute spectacle stretched out to a nearly intolerable 135-minutes. Absolutely no justification for its length.

Now, I need to share this with all you. Let me tell you beforehand that I used to throw stuff at those who called the Wachowsky visionaries, and I though the "Matrix" sequels stunk to high heavens. And I've never seen a single episode of "Speed Racer" either.
Yet I saw the film this afternoon, and absolutely loved it. And now I think the Wachowsky are visionaries and that all the hype around them is justified. Yes, I agree the running time is excessive, and the plot and characters are, well, satuday morning cartoon like. Yet I found that cute, and I'll go as far as saying that John Goodman and Christina Ricci are memorable.
But the best of it it's the camerawork. It's not just eye candy. My God! This is how videogame adaptations should be. It's a perfect amalgam of classic cinema, plus elements borrowed from anime (gotta love those morphing backdrops) and yes, videogames. Like intro / outro sequences that are seamlessly inserted into the narrative, camerawork that faithfully reproduces the exhilarating feeling of racing, travellings that completely schew the laws of physics... Hell, they even took inspiration from stuff like "Trackmania" and "Star Wars Racer" for the "level" design, and mapped special weapons to A-B-C buttons. These guys are visionaries.
And no, I don't use drugs.
