Things have a tendency to be entirely too civil and evenhanded around here. Whilst watching Lost tonight a topic occurred to me that has the potential to flare tempers and create the ranting that any good forum should have. Abortion? Religion? Politics? NAH!! In the grandest tradition of Kirk vs. Picard, Joel vs. Mike and Ginger vs. Maryann, I ask you:
Who is better, J.J. Abrams or Joss Whedon??
I've never seen Alias but I hear it's good. However I'm a total Lost fanatic. IMHO it's the best fiction show on network TV right now, including Heroes. However J.J. didn't really do the Mission Impossible franchise any favors, but maybe that was beyond his control. What he will do in terms of rebooting Trek remains to be seen.
On the other hand, there's Joss. Again, shocking though it may seem I have never seen an episode of geek favorite Buffy or Angel. I think I would like them though based on what I've heard. But I have seen Firefly, pretty much one of the better network TV shows EVER. Serenity was a wee bit underwhelming as a feature follow-up, but still pretty great.
Both J's have shows in development for the coming TV season. I *think* based on Firefly I give the edge right now to Joss. The closing season of Lost and a good Trek prequel could tip me to J.J.
What say you, good sirs??

Yes, Picard is better than Kirk, but Star Trek's most realistic commander remains Benjamin Sisko.
PEGGY: I don't see how having a girl on the team would ruin it. Did a woman judge ruin the Supreme Court? HANK: Yes, and that woman's name was Earl Warren.

I tend to agree with that, actually. There was always something really weird about Avery Brooks' performance though- his dialog always sounded affected and unnatural. Like many Trek characters he improved greatly when he grew the beard.

I'm playing.
I'd go with Whedon. As much as I enjoy "Lost", I have a low tolerance for Abrams' other shows (specially "Alias" or "Felicity"), and I think the guy is waaay overated. And there's also those ad campaigns for "Cloverfield" and their sequels, they make the whole thing look retarded.
As for Whedon, it took him a while to polish his style, but once he mastered the way of inserting pop culture and fourth wall mindgames in his shows he started doing great stuff. The three last seasons of "Buffy" are lots of fun, and so is "Angel". And as for "Firefly", that's the best TV show ever, period.
Plus he led mankind (and lesbian-kind) to women like Charisma Carpenter, Alyson Hannigan, Amy Acker and Summer Glau.

I am going to pick Joss as I haven't seen Lost or any of JJ's other shows. What can I say, there was a time when I didn't have TV.
And I throw in with Sisko. After all, he did punch Q. |

Sisko was wooden and unconvincing the first couple of seasons. He started to improve in season three. Finally, he shaved the head and grew the goatee and slipped a little Hawk into his acting, and BAM! He's the MAN!
So, second-half-of-series Sisko, then Picard, then.... the.... captain who.... inserts pauses where.... there.... should be.... no.... pauses!
Oh, and I'm picking J. J. Abrams, because I'm a Lost fan, and I never got into Buffy (well, I'd like to get into— um, nevermind). Besides, though I loved Toy Story, remember that Joss Whedon wrote Alien Resurrection, a serious mark against him. |

I think we have to throw Ron Moore into the mix. As such I'll go with Abrams. Lost has recovered nicely from a near suicide. While Whedon can write some sharp dialogue, there is something about all of his characters that annoy me.

My favorite line from DS9 was Q saying "You hit me! Picard never hit me!"

| If we're talking about taking sides it's gotta' be Joss. Whereas I liked Lost, for the most part, I've never cared to try Alias or, god forbid, Felicity and the less said about Mission Impossible 3 the better. Joss on the other hand has yet to really let me down since he hit his stride with Buffy if you ignore earlier stumbles such as Alien Ressurection and Titan AE. Okay, the later seasons of Buffy weren't very good but Angel and Firefly were great. Plus I would say that he has a more distinct and influential style than Abrams. |

As much as I like Whedon's work, gotta agree there. Most of his characters all speak in the same loudmouth, wisecracking way, no matter different age or background. |

I don't know if JJ is responsible for this, but I really enjoyed the format of Alias's first season. Action sequences took place at the beginning and end of every episode (and were always "to be continued"), while storylines were wrapped up in the middle. It really gave the series a pulpy edge that few shows have delivered since.
