You all have reminded me of a few more:
The Justice League (Not the "Unlimited" follow-up) The Professionals (A British show in the style of "The Avengers") And from cartoons: Chip and Dale's Rescue Rangers
Just for the record, the ORIGONAL instermental music for Scooby Doo, Where Are You? that was played in the opening and durring the closing credits of the first episode and for the closing credits of the second episode was a LOT better than the famous "Scooby dooby doo, where are you? (ect)"

Hard to really say which are my favourites since I can't remember most of them! One of those problems as get older they tell me. Of those that I can remember you guys have already nailed them such as:
The Avengers Hawaii 5-0 Miami Vice SWAT Peter Gunn
However, I'm really surprised that no one thought of The X-Files and Twin Peaks? Just thinking of them made me pop a DVD into the slot a listen to them.
But I must confess my favourite TV theme songs are a couple of oldie goldies, and westerns both:
Bonanza and The Lone Ranger.
"When you have to shoot, shoot, don't talk."
Tuco Benedicto Pacifico Juan Maria Ramirez, aka "Tuco," aka "the Rat," aka "Ugly," aka "il Cattivo" |

My favorites include
Maverick, Who's that tall dark stranger there? maverick is the name.
Taxi, lovely wistful Bob James tune
Bonanza reminiscent of the Magnificent 7 capturing the wide open space of the mythic west.
The Rebel Johnny Yuma by Johnny Cash, great song.
Mission Impossible Grabs you in the same way that the original James Bond theme does. Same can be said for The Man From UNCLE.
Dr. Who The original theme from 1963 was one of the most innovative things ever on tv. The hypnotic base line came in part from banging on a piano string and the melody came from an oscillator.
Peter Gunn always had very good jazzy music that was played live.
Hawaii 5/O and the Ventures. Just too good for words. |

| I forgot Welcome Back by John Sebastian. The song was so good that the name of the show was changed from Kotter to Welcome Back Kotter. Its a beautiful song. Too bad that the show was pure obvious junk. |

Lots of good ones here, so I'll just add "Batman: The Animated Series."
In fact, the one from the Adam West show was pretty good too. |

I forgot about Rawhide, fantastic show perfectly complimented by Frankie Laine and that song.
The closing theme for Red Dwarf was intentionally tacky and comical and as a result it sticks in your head like a bad cold. Its cold outside, there's no kind of atmosphere...great song for that funny show.
The Lone Ranger used Rossini to perfection.
For the worst ever I select:
I Dream Of Jeanie, tacky dull repetitive, awful.

Another reason Samantha is better than Jeannie! Bewitched Jazzy, but smooth.

BUMP!
Now that we've got the juices flowing, recommendations on the best TV theme CD compilations? Here's one I found:
http://music.barnesandnoble.com/All-Time-Top-100-TV-Themes/e/016581117020/?itm=2
They would all appear to be original cuts, too, not remakes. What I'm looking for in particular is one that contains the long versions of many TV themes. For instance, Gary Portnoy's theme to Cheers was also released as a three minute single, as was Joey Scarbury's theme to Greatest American Hero and John Sebastian's Welcome Back Kotter.
I wonder how many other shows also released their themes separately as singles. |

| Magnum P.I. did, but it's not that interesting. At the televisiontunes.com link I gave earlier, you can hear it. |

Hill Street Blues was a single. I'm pretty sure S.W.A.T. was.

SWAT was a single, Sardu. We played it a lot while training at Camp Bullis, Texas.

D'oh! Sardu reminded me... RED DWARF and THUNDERBIRDS. Oh, and STINGRAY.The drum part in Stingray makes me envision an english guy in a suit, drumming like mad and grinning the same way...I donno why...
Marvin the Paranoid Android to Buzz Lightyear "Too infinity and beyond-i've been there, its rubbish!" "Hoody Hoo, i waste 'em with my cross bow!" Bob Herzog- KODT

| What about The Equalizer? Not only was a great show, thanks to its somber tone and Alfred Woodward's acting, but it also had a killer theme by Stewart Copeland from The Police. |
