Miller's Crossing would have ended after the first scene if Leo had agreed to give up Bernie Bernbaun to Johnny Caspar.

I'm not so sure. I think Johnny had his eyes on Leo's spot, and Bernie was just the excuse.

That's a biggie. It shows that Lucas knew it was a giant plot contrivance or he wouldn't even have addressed it in the dialog at all. It's not even like it's the Empire's ship and they're being cost-conscious...

You could do an alternate game of "The movie would have lasted twice as long if..." with that one:
If Gollum hadn't been there to bite the ring off history would simply have repeated itself! (Which brings up another point- you could have pushed Isildur in yourself, Elrond. Yeah he was the High King and all but elves have a pretty "sh!t happens" attitude about that sort of thing.)

Jaws: Brody insists on taking two boats out, the Orca and Hooper's boat. He promises to give Quint the same deal regardless, saying Hooper's more interested in the research; if Quint doesn't go along, tough. Quint goes along.
Also....
.... if Quint had listened to Hooper, not waited for him to tie the barrel on, and gotten a good harpoon shot, right in the head. |

Why did they need Quint at all? Hooper and Brody could have just gone out on Hooper's boat with an uzi and a bazooka and done the job themselves. It's not like Hooper didn't know anything about hunting or finding sharks.

Are you confusing characters? Quint is the sea wolf, and Hooper the scientist played ny Richard Dreyfuss. I could have bought them leaving Hooper in town, as he (apparently) wasn't that essential.
His presence on the latest pact of the movie feels like a "residue" of sorts from translating the novel to screenplay to me. Hooper has a bigger role there, and a subplot has him sleeping with Brody's wife. My guess is that Benchley put him in the boat with Brody and Quint to increase tension, by having the readers expect Brody to find out about the situation. |

......if Dr. Crowe had grabbed his wife and fled the house instead of having a conversation with Vincent Grey.
......if Mrs. Fremont had said, "Mmmm....no, I don't think we need a feast, Egyptian or otherwise; let's just go with finger sandwiches."
......if Herschel hadn't gone home with Angel, or better yet not pulled over in the first place.
......if only that scientist hadn't Tampered in God's Domain. (Note: This applies to a LOT of movies.)
......if they'd tried to kill the damn monster first instead of trying to capture it. (Ditto.)
This is kinda fun!
