If marshall Kaine and a couple of deputies had gone to the railroad station with shotguns and waited for the ex-con.
Alternatly, if the townspeople in High Noon had some backbone and didn't need Kaine to wipe the asses noses for them.
Then again, why didn't he accept the help offered by the old gunman?

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: Tuco's bath scene: if the one-armed man had just burst in and started shooting, instead of mouthing off, Tuco would have been dead-as-a-nail. So, instead of the three-way shootout at the end, it would have "Angel Eyes" and "Blondie" only and who knows who would have won.
