I don’t know if this is place. But this forum is the only place I visit that might be remotely interested in this topic.
I speak today of the final throws of what was Disney’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea ride(20K ride). I know that good things always come to an end*. But it still is depressing when you know something good will never come back. Unfortunately, that happened this year.
The masters of Disney world have demolished the lagoon that was once the 20K ride. They leveled the interior, filled it with dirt, leveled it again and built a small “100 Acre Forrest” attraction for little kids. One or two of the submarines were sunk at the Disney Caribbean Cruise Resort to add scenery. The rest were cut in to little pieces and sold on ebay as souvenirs. From the prices I saw, the 20K ride might go down in history as the first to GAIN money from its destruction.
The only thing that is left now are the memories. I rode that ride when I was a kid. Man, that was trip. The Disney movie held a special place in my heart because, being the family to first have a VCR on our block, we bought $20,000 Leagues Under the Sea as our first pre-recorded tape. Seventy-Dollar price tag. And that was the first movie I ever watched. So it was interesting to board the Nautilus and listen to what sounded like James Mason-y Captain Nemo narrate our journey. To see the underwater Nautilus crew wrangling turtles, catch fish, and work on underwater machinery was cool. And to be on the Nautilus, as we passed by sunken ships, glaciers, sunken cities and a Giant Squid were just the thing to fire your imagination.
But alas. The ride is gone and all that is left are the photos and videos of what once was.
There may be hope for the future. When the world is ready for a new and better life, a new 20K ride may someday come to pass. In god’s good time.

Well...that stinks. I've only been to Disneyworld once, in 1980 when I was seven years old. But I remember being extremely impressed with the 20k ride. From within, it actually looked as if you were that deep. Later on, riding the gondola above it, my young mind couldn;t comprehend that it was really just a shallow pool.
That, Mr. Toad's Wild Ride and the Pirates of the Carribbean were my favorite rides. I understand that they are all gone now. |

Maybe it's my ego. But I just can't believe Winnie the Pooh beat Captain Nemo. Or at least, I can't accept the fact Pooh is dancing on his grave.
I always had hope that as long as the lagoon was there it could be reopened.

Mr. Toad's Wild Ride has been turned into Pooh's Honeypot Ride. Pirates of the Carribean was still going fine when I was there two years ago. It may have been shut down since, but they had 20,000 leagues shut down already at the time so it obviously takes them more than 2 years to decide to end a ride.
Oh, and for PotC the line was insanely long. We foolishly brought my daughter along forgetting the big drop at the start. I think she would have enjoyed the rest if she had just calmed down after that. She loved the video of the ride.

Wow, haven't ridden the 20K ride since I was a kid, but like Capt. Nemo (uh, both of them I guess) I loved it. It's pretty damn sad that it's gone.
It would seem odd to end the Pirates one, what with the new film and everything. Ah, the Entertainment industry. Who can figure them. |

I liked that ride too. Years ago it shut down in Disney World and the entry became a "Charicter Greeting" area and one side was expanded into "Ariel's Grotto". I haven't been to Disney World for about a year because I'm trying to save for a new car, but I used to go almost every other month and would look at the lagoon with a sigh to see it empty.

I rode the Pirates of the Caribean ride at Disney World last December. It was nice, but nothing compared to Mission Space.

I had heard that it was torn down, but I appear to be incorrect on that one. I loved that first drop. I rode it next to my mother, who had laryngitis at the time so listening to her try to scream when the boat dropped was half the fun. |

I remember the "Submarine Voyage" ride at the original Disneyland in Anaheim. (I grew up within walking distance of it.) Check out these photographs.

I think I remember topless mermaids (without nipples), but I may be making that up, based on the centaurs in Fantasia.
Apparently the "Submarine Voyage" has been gone since 1998.
As a matter of fact, check out all of this site called "Yesterland," which has a ton of information on old Disneyland rides. My favorite "land," as a budding science fiction fan, was always Tomorrowland.

Sorry, I'm still not convinced. The dictionary says a submarine is "A vessel that is capable of operating submerged." Since a vessel is either an airship or a vehicle capable of traveling through water, it seems to me that just being submersible (in water) would automatically make is a vessel, then. Would a submersible train count?
And what about a submersible derigible?
